My wife had double pneumonia, she was in coma for 10 days and on ventilator in ICU.
She recovered but then we got the bill, 50 pages long. There were dozen or more items billed for every day she was in hospital for 2 weeks. I stayed in her hospital room 24-7. So I saw exactly what was done for treatments. So I called the hospital to explain all this charges. Their response...ask our doctor to explain!
Like the doctor has time to go through 50 pages of items.

Then I called insurance company to complain about the padded bill. I was shocked with their response!
They basically said, don't worry, we will pay everything!!

So I conclude, the health insurance industry wants bills to be high so we ALL must keep paying for insurance and not take a chance by dropping the insurance.

Hospitals want costs high too. Medicare was ripped-off in this instance.

This was from a knee replacement my Mom had a year ago.

So what you saw was the pre negotiated fees.

Your insurance company did not pay that bill as is.

I can only imagine the dollar amount, the icu can be 10-20k per day.

Walk into Walmart and buy vials of insulin for 25 bucks without insurance. It’s not much better but its accessible. My wife used to be on a lily program to get analog insulin vials for 7 bucks direct from lily.
