(CNN)Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared Monday to voice support for a controversial state bill that would ban certain discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom.
DeSantis, a Republican, said it was "entirely inappropriate" for teachers and school administrators to have conversations with students about their gender identity, saying that, in some schools, children are told "Don't worry, don't pick your gender yet." DeSantis, though, also acknowledged, "I don't think it's happening here in large numbers."
"Schools need to be teaching kids to read, to write," the governor said at a press event Monday. "They need to teach them science, history. We need more civics and understanding of the US Constitution, what makes our country unique, all those basic things."
It's the first time DeSantis has publicly signaled support for an effort by state Republican lawmakers to shut down certain conversations in schools about sexual orientation and gender identity. Though he didn't directly say whether he would sign the bill if it reached his desk when asked about it Monday, DeSantis' remarks appeared to strongly suggest he is supportive.

For so many years, they've come close to these lines but tended to back off at the last minute. Now they are going full steam ahead on the crazy train.

(83,746 posts)They need to teach them:
Science- Yet Florida denies the science of COVID. They allow it to spread.
History-They want to wipe out the past and only select what should be taught. Not the history of women's struggle to vote and be equal, not slavery and racism and not LGBTQ struggle and history. The stigma that they have lived with. The deaths in all said groups.
Reading- They are burning all the books. How can they read when all the books are burnt.
More civics and understanding of the US Constitution- More lies you want to white wash 01/06.
He wants to white wash history. I hope he roasts in hell.
I am so sorry, Bill.

(7,597 posts)sexual identity has sexual issues themselves. The parents who think this is necessary have real issues. Are they afraid that sexuality is contagious? That Jesus will keep them out of their heaven? That the country club members will ridicule them.
Get a frigging life.
