How about the millions and millions of tons of lead that was vaporized by burning leaded gas up until the 1970s? The stuff didn't just disappear. And I'm sure that the oil companies had absolutely no clue that it was harmful to human health, just like the tobacco companies.

Who needs to blame vaccines for the increase in autism (as many have), when we've been surrounded by poison for years and years and years??? Nobody is even bringing this up. How long before there's a study, and the oil companies get sued????

Lead exposure in the US is nothing like lead pipe exposure in Rome, which also had lead in other metal objects and lead in glazes on pottery and plates and cups and wine goblets, ....

With advanced telecommunications, radio, TV, internet, social media, smart phones, ... we are doing an experiment on the distributed nervous system of society.

It used to be that events and ideas would take weeks to penetrate most parts of the country. Now it takes seconds.

So an electrifying but fake or stupid idea or claim can energize the social nervous system before it has been properly processed and contextualized.

This is new with the 19th century (telegraph), the 20th, and now the 21st. What is really new since 1995 is the accelerating pace of these changes.

That acceleration is more than just a quantitative change; it is a qualitative change. The way the social zeitgeist functions is different in how and not just how much.

Also important is "teaching to the test" and constricting teachers in so many ways, which has severe effects on critical reasoning capabilities. Strangling education, such as arts and music, cuts off cross-domain development in the brain, which is very important.

Mentioned by another poster, and important, are nutrition and health care, issues that affect people the most who are dim to begin with or are children of dim parents.
