"SNIP......
Dr. Anthony Fauci told the Financial Times that the United States is heading out of the full blown pandemic phase of Covid-19, as he predicted a combination of vaccinations, treatments and prior infection would soon make the virus more manageable.
Fauci added that there would be an end to all pandemic-related restrictions in the coming months including mandatory wearing of masks.
Said Fauci: As we get out of the full-blown pandemic phase of Covid-19, which we are certainly heading out of, these decisions will increasingly be made on a local level rather than centrally decided or mandated. There will also be more people making their own decisions on how they want to deal with the virus.

Rumsfeld and Cheney knew Russia was going bankrupt in the 1970s but saved it for Ronald Reagan to do 'star wars' and get the credit for ending communism.

(36,108 posts)Prior to the pandemic, you mask according to seasonal flu outbreaks or when you think it's necessary
What is with people and this whole mask fReeDoM bs?

(3,161 posts)How is that at all similar to mandates?

(36,108 posts)The issue was the poster suggesting people can't be expected to "mask forever," even after the mandates are removed. Long before the pandemic people in other countries were masking for various health reasons. It's weird, although apparently very American, to believe that masking is some kind of punishment
AlexSFCA
(6,137 posts)when someone is sick, masks should be encouraged. I may not have lived in SE Asia but masking prior to pandemic is a a matter of caring and politeness when sick, not mandate for all.

(43,349 posts)the pandemic is long officially over.
I am afraid a handful will never go back to pre-pandemic lifestyles. Some may well be locked into lifetimes of permanent paranoia. That will only be a very, very small minority and it is their choice.
The only issue I will have is if they try to permanently keep fanning the flames via dodgy virtue signalling and attempts at scolding/shaming as their permanent stance.
At some point, the most vociferous will become cranks. You cannot force an extreme stance on the vast majority and expect to not eventually be perceived otherwise.
That all said, we are nowhere, nowhere near that stage in the pandemic, but it will come, I do predict.

(13,493 posts)I know a few (in real life) people who are so paranoid that it's negatively affected their lives, their kids and their relationships. It's really sad to see, and I think that they're suffering for it. But, for them, the restrictions are on themselves and their immediate families. They're not internet warriors who are accusing people who are going out to eat of committing 'passive eugenics.'

And yes, there is a twitter contingency that is so pro-restriction that they accuse people who advocate for reduced restrictions of committing genocide.
There are people on the internet who advocate for shooting people if they don't follow restrictions. (Bizarrely, one of those people is an ex-Jeopardy champion named Arthur Chu.) They exist now and will exist into perpetuity. And I honestly think they're as big a problem as

(53,032 posts)why not? It's not close to gone yet.

(3,161 posts)That's why restrictions are being lifted. To each their own on masking moving forward.

(53,032 posts)not because of science. People are sick of wearing masks. Their effectiveness hasn't changed. We are still seeing huge numbers of deaths. The question is why people no longer care.
Ace Rothstein
(3,161 posts)The reason most are dying is because they are taking no precautions, mainly vaccines which are very effective at preventing death. I feel terrible for the small number of vaccinated who are dying but we'll never be able to fully protect them.

(6,137 posts)It will never go away. The world is closely watching Denmark which lifted all covid restrictions. Imagine that - no quarantine, no isolation, no symptoms check, no mask, etc. Children death rate from flu - 1.9%, children death rate from covid - 0.072%. Why is flu vaccine not mandatory for kids??? Yet there are plans to make covid vaccine mandatory for kids. IMO, both should be mandatory (why not) but it makes precisely zero sense to mandate only covid vaccine for kids based on data.
