... for filing a complaint against a potential candidate. NC happens to have a low bar for doing so. And Cawthorn's conduct seems to have been particularly egregious. If they are successful, this may be possible in a few other states, depending on circumstances and state law.

No one is being charged with a crime. This isn't in any way a criminal proceeding. As far as can be told from the public record, Cawthorn has not done anything illegal.

... to a lawsuit filed by Cawthorn claiming it does not have the authority. The board was asked to disqualify him by a group of citizens. It has to follow its procedures and has to assert its authority before it comes to a decision.

It makes the challenge real. It also underlines that Cawthorn is not exempt just because he was elected previously, and just because he's a neo-Nazi (He actually is one- makes frequent use of specific NAZI language, gestures, and imagery, along with the salute).
