Merrick Garland is going to be busy.

(14,708 posts)Like congress, the doj can bottle up investigations at lower levels. They don't go upwards until a charging/declination decision is reached. And that only happens if the investigators do their jobs.
It may eventually get to the point of a bullet item in a staff meeting, but not before it's baked. And sometimes the chef's don't put them in the ovens very quickly.
Bureaucracy thrives at justice.
Now I'm sure he asks for regular updates on any tfg related investigations. At least I'm hoping he does.

(31,981 posts)But not #2 or #3. #3 will go nowhere. The last time it came up was when Sandy Berger stole documents from the National Archives reading room ("I forgot I put them in my socks" . He received a fine.

(51,129 posts)And, if you were paying attention, that was not a good thing.
These referrals go to MI and DC USAs, and the DoJ Deputy Director is in charge of criminal matters.

I think it started with Christopher Steele and others in the Russia investigation.

(18,122 posts)They can act on their own as long as Biden is in office.
Congressional investigations are a different matter.

(63,203 posts)When I have expressed doubt that The System is working steadily toward justice, I've been assured that Garland is waiting to act until the congressional investigation is completed.
That assurance is offered as a statement of faith with little or no supporting evidence, and as you note the congressional investigation will disappear instantly if Repugs take congress, even if they take it through the very same criminal shenanigans that the current congress is slowly investigating.

(18,122 posts)I also have doubts that The System, as you call it, is working steadily towards justice. I think we're seeing a new, unwritten policy that former presidents are above the law.

(21,304 posts)a former counselor for president Obama said tonight, the National Archives recovered 15 boxes of documents. She then went on to say, the implication is, that's not all of the stolen documents, there are more that are not recovered.
Also there is an indication that some of the documents were classified. What am I missing here? To me that is a BFD, punishable up to 20 years in jail.
DOJ needs to take this investigation it could very well be the one to bring Trump down.
Please folks, let's not refer to the letters from Kim as love letters, that is right wing propaganda. letters from foreign leaders are matters of national security that the incoming president needs to be aware of. Stop calling them Kim love letters.
Lock him up.
