When I hit post my thread on my latest OP, I did so expecting that it might be my last. And I was prepared to accept that outcome.
I knew there would be some here who supported my views, but never expected there would be so many who did so.
I was in a 'state' when I posted - a state of anger, a state of frustration, but mostly a state of despair that many of my fellow Democrats find it necessary to disparage those of us who believe that fighting for justice is a means to ensuring that it finally will prevail.
Many responders perceived my OP as a call for censorship, or a mandate that opposing views should be quashed - and I blame myself for that perception. Apparently I did not express myself with as much clarity as was warranted.
The fact is that there is a difference, IMHO, between stating one's belief that justice will inevitably not be served and the need to mock the opinions of those who believe otherwise.
Replies to "good news" revelations about Trump & Co's corruption and illegal activities that consist of they're going to get away with it anyway serve no purpose other than to dampen the enthusiasm of those who see those revelations as yet another step towards exposing what needs to be exposed.
I am truly grateful to all of you who renewed my faith in my fellow DUers, and recognized that expressing my dismay at those who encourage us to give up the fight is being recognized for what it is.
In addition, thank you for all the hearts - dozens of which were donated after I posted what I thought would be my last OP here.
I thought I was alone in my views - apparently I wasn't. And I appreciate every one of you who let me know, in no uncertain terms, that the fight goes on.

(21,321 posts)We are on the same page, we are not divided. I want more from DOJ, so what? Many feel that DOJ is acting just as it should, I totally respect that. Why does there have to be a fight? We all have the same goal, accountability, that is what unites us.

(629 posts)Altho you may have been disparaged by some here who believe justice will never be served to those whose lust for power and greed know no boundaries (me being one) we still do our small part by participating in campaigns, voting, whatever. I personally contribute a thousand dollars to the DNC yearly. It's not much but it helps. I make some phone calls for people running on the Democrat ticket. I do nothing great but to slog on and hope. Everyone here on this site also does what they can to help even if it is something small like telling a friend to vote Democrat in an election. It may sway a vote. It is something. We all still do small things despite our feelings that the GOP is nothing more than a crime syndicate now.
The only way I will change my mind about the GOP skating around justice is to see a lot (not just the few we have seen so far) of indictments handed out to the criminals that have turned our country into their own private fiefdom.

(14,571 posts)about Trump ever actually being prosecuted, but that doesn't mean we aren't fighting the good fight at local, state and even national levels.
These Republicans have rejected democracy, and are trying to drag us down the slippery slope to an authoritarian government.
But we do have to be careful. Even now, our media is conflating anti-war sentiment with a lack of patriotism. And, if you have followed our history, you know, as I do, that every time the people start to force the issue on voting, healthcare, higher wages, better working conditions and so on, the oligarchs simply throw a little war.
Consider WWI and the Sedition Act that imprisoned the true American hero Eugene Debs, while it elevated the Bush family to prominence through selling weapons...to both sides.
Consider WWII - unions were strong, and labor was clawing back again - so we embargoed the oil supply for the Japanese Empire. The result: Pearl Harbor and war. We became the arsenal of democracy. Or so they say.
Then think about the first coup - how the Military Industrial Complex became preeminent and impossible to dislodge at all after the assassination of JFK. By 1965, LBJ had sent half a million of our kids over to support a corrupt tin-pot dictatorship in South Vietnam just because the MIC wanted to sell more weapons and achieve higher shareholder profits.
And think about events subsequent to 911 - the Neocons wanting an oil empire, and lying about WMD in Iraq. The Bush Doctrine. Unilateral invasion of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Truth is, the oligarchs are the real rulers of us. This is why we can squander $4.2 trillion on the two forever wars, and waste trillions more on feckless, irresponsible tax cuts for billionaire parasites. They want all the money from our treasury, and what do we get?
Individual taxpayers like us supplying 86% of the government's tax revenue while corporations only put in 6.8%.
Crumbling infrastructure.
Crummy, rationed healthcare with financially crippling copays.
Our grandkids having to borrow ever higher amounts to finance college, and so starting off in deep holes of debt.
So, yeah, Nance...we all have to fight the good fight, and KEEP fighting even when things seem darkest.
Those of you who know me know that I advocate ending the shareholder primacy doctrine and imposing a stakeholder approach on corporate governance, and revising the tax code so it is impossible for anyone to become a billionaire, and so corporations and rich people pay their fair share, and finally Medicare for all Americans. Those would be a good start, policy wise.
But then, the billionaire parasites have lots of money, and they attack decency on a thousand different fronts every day, with think tanks like ALEC, the Federalist Society, and the Heritage Foundation - to name only a few. What do we have? Our votes. Our ability to be involved at the local level. Our social media. Our ability to educate apathetic people.

(3,389 posts)Anyone who read that is because they understood things that were not there, I thought your message was very clear, as it always is. Your message was one that needed to be said and needs to be spread because I too have complained about people writing negative scripts, it doesn't help and we must believe that at the end of the day justice will prevail and the thugs will be made accountable.
I understand the frustrations, I too have them from not seeing anything happening with the DOJ, but we must believe those who know, like Dan Goldman, Neal Katyal who stay positive the DOJ is on it but keeping things under wraps, and in the mean time we must continue educating those who do not seem to grab the facts of the destruction and criminality of trump and his gang.
Nance, you are a treasure to DU, I am always looking forward to reading your posts, you are an incredible writer, national newspapers should publish everything you write.

(5,930 posts)In war, soldiers must not spread despair and defeatism in the ranks. Posts that say, in essence, "We're in terrible danger!" are good, and necessary. But those that seem to say, "The battle's already over, and we've lost!" can serve no purpose - except perhaps to help bring about the defeat that the poster envisions.
Buck up, soldiers.

(11,736 posts)You didn't break any TOS. Were you planning to quit DU?
I don't fully agree with what you posted, and primarily stayed away from that thread. I understand your frustration with seeing people post their own frustrations about the situation we are in.
We here in America have a pretty poor record of holding the powerful to account. We have elections and people are sent packing, but we have a really bad record of holding politicians who have ostensibly broken our laws to account.
I have said this many times, but we have had AT LEAST two politicians that became Presidents that illegally negotiated foreign policy during election years. One of whom was eventually forces to resign for unrelated crimes, and the other who is celebrated. We had an administration blatantly lie us into two wars that we spent the last 12 to 20 years fighting.
I value good faith disagreement and argument. I think that facts and truth, or at least mutual understanding can be achieved. The problem is that too many of us see any opposition as bad faith. We don't try to understand where a person may be coming from.
There are some fairly obvious signs of a bad faith argument, but even the "despair" posts can be coming from a genuine place and not meant merely to disrupt or "bring people down". When we say, "They serve no purpose other than to..." that is shutting down any conversation.
I have asked people questions in posts to try to understand the motivations for their arguments. Sometimes they get very upset and start calling names or dodging in other ways. Then I know that I cannot engage in a good faith discussion.
I often find your posts interesting and I know that we need to fight for our country. Having a real conversation can be difficult but I think that DU could be better if we were really trying to have those conversations.

(90,667 posts)And as you see, I was far from the only one. There are so many days recently where I scan the GD posts and just go aaaagh, and move on.
We got trolls, and there are nights when I get sucked down the vortex by them as they amplify my darkest thoughts.
Even so DU has had some bad patches before. I left once for a couple of years, after several of my friends got ejected and I started being stalked myself.
The country itself has had some bad patches before, but as this is broad daylight and not 1:30 in the morning, I dont think Im leaving the country too old, for one thing.
No brilliant advice here, but last time I secretly started thinking about leaving DU one of my friends happened to start a thread about all the people shed miss, if and by the time I reached 10 on my mental count, I realized I wasnt going anyplace. This month when I renewed and bought hearts, I had a lengthy list of folks whose posts I look for every day.

(7,632 posts)Came close with Nixon, but
If that is to happen, then that case had better be absolutely airtight with every I dotted and Tcrossed, checked and then double checked and that, I realize, takes time.
As impatient as I am to see justice served and that orange baboon punished, especially with him committing further crimes right out in the open, I believe the DOJ is due a little more time and benefit of the doubt before we completely give up on them.
It will be hard enough to convict him with potential Trumpers in the jury pool but can you imagine the reaction if we screwed up right out of the gate?
