It was interesting to see what the averages were though.

(38,311 posts)Nevertheless my public politics are always practical.
Anyone who says "both parties are the same" or throws their "progressive" vote away on some unelectable candidate hoping to send some kind of message needs to be smacked with a clue stick.
Politics is a messy business.

I guess that makes me establishment. Sure, whatever.

(10,895 posts)That's where I was going with it. I'm all for radical change, but not so keen on tossing out the Constitution.
But, apparently, that makes me "establishment". OK.
hunter
(38,311 posts)But it has to be a measured approach. The "system" of Rosa Park's time was legally oppressing people who were not white and the white majority tacitly supported that oppression. People seeking progress had to step outside of that system to shed light on the injustice of it.
On the other hand storming the Capital Building to overturn a legitimate election is not a measured response. It doesn't matter if it's fascists and white supremacists or radical leftists who are scaling the walls.
I agree with you, the question was ambiguous, but it does highlight a difference between "conservative" and "liberal" Democrats.

(525 posts)I describe myself as socially liberal, and fiscally conservative. The term "Establishment" has become more a slur directed at people that are more into incremental change.
Some of the questions presented were way too black and white. For example, the question about prison time. I selected not enough, based on the fact that too many white, or wealthy individuals that do not serve enough time for the crimes they commit. The problem however, is that there is no room for nuance. As we all know, POCs are disproportionately given harsher sentences for the same crimes.

(484 posts)which isnt surprising, but I agree that many of the questions choices lacked nuance. For example, I answered the prison sentence question as "too long" because of the mass incarceration of POCs and drug sentencing but I also think that rich/influential people get away with a huge amount of crime and arent held accountable. I also think "increased trade" has been a mixed bag for working people because there were few, if any, regulations to protect workers from income loss while trade increased. So trade could have been increased (maybe not as much) without huge losses if the govt had effectively mitigated the impact.
