1) if the governor here in Connecticut allows it (which is expected), the school will end the mask mandate as of the end of February.
2) 8 new Covid cases in the high school alone.

(9,173 posts)She is vaccinated, and her school district had a mask mandate, so we felt pretty good about it. Within days the 8th Circuit struck down the mandate, absent students with disabilities in the school, and the second week her teacher was out with covid.
It breaks your heart when a little girl says, I know Im going to get covid. I just hope when I do, its not too bad.

(65,030 posts)I sub in multiple districts.
A stupid lawsuit filed by some stupid downstate grandstander, led to an injunction by a stupid judge that invalidated masks for kids in schools, here in illinois.
Judge decided the governor overstepped his constitutional authority. Exactly how he came to that conclusion is a mystery. Seems to me, the chief executive of any government has a first duty to protect the citizenry. Taking public health measures to protect the people seems obviously within the governor's duty.
What do i know? I'm just a highly educated resident of that state. Probably more educated, in fact, than that judge.
But, I'm sure he thinks people like me (citizens) are nobodies and they couldn't possibly do logic like he can with his prodigious brain.
This lawsuit included districts where some random parent in each could sign on to the suit. 5 of the districts in which i sub are included.
So, suddenly masking is optional. The % of kids masked is down to 25, at best.

(65,030 posts)However, zero of lower level staff.
Maintenance, administrative aides, food service...all masked.
Saw the music teacher & the vice principal unmasked. They've gone full "optional".
I left mine on, except during plan time when I was the only one in the room.
As you know, during plan time subs really have nothing to do. I got lucky & the choir room was empty for half my downtime. So, I played piano for about a half hour. Didn't wear my mask then either. But, any time there were other people, I had it on.

(32,858 posts)The few that dont follow mask rules are also not vaccinated. I stay on the opposite side of the building.
We have a lot of custodians out right now. So much so that not all classrooms are vacuumed daily right now.

(22,767 posts)worrisome enough for us as it is. I can't even imagine how it's been for people who also have kids to be concerned about.

(32,639 posts)Even if/when the so-called mandate is removed, everyone is free to exercise their own judgment and wear a mask if they want to. If they aren't then something is really FUBAR*.
*military term which means "f**ked up beyond all recognition"

(52,221 posts)And she's fully vaxxed and boosted. So in the scheme of things she's relatively safe. But not as safe as she'd be if others, especially the unvaxxed kids, also wore masks.
And there are many militant "unmask out kids" parents around here....
