(46,426 posts)Putin thinks he is the smartest and richest man in the world.
He has met his match with China.
They will eat him up and spit him out if they want.

(3,334 posts)Also their tactical nuclear weapons number 3,000-6,000. China has 150. I large army doesn't do a country any good if all its cities are radioactive ash heaps. It is definitely not a good idea to invade Russia.

(36,744 posts)Many Chinese have moved to the Russian Far East.
Eventually many, many more will go north when climate change kicks into overdrive.

(11,722 posts)They might team up together to mess with the United States, but they are bigger rivals to each other than to the US. China is reliant on trade with the United States. They actually share borders with each other. They are both vying to be the big player in regions bordering on each other as well.
They will not play well together for long.

(32,691 posts)In the long run, as you said Russia will lose out. China highly values education and cultural endeavors and of course wants to continue trade with the US which Russia doesnt
Seems possibly a self limiting push on the part of Russia

(7,510 posts)However, US/UK policy has been to prevent that under any other terms than as a completely obsequious vassal to New York and London.
The process of subjugation of Russia began under Yeltsin, but Putin has managed to stop and reverse it. At present Russia has no other choice than to ally with China.
Post Brexit, there is the possibility of rapprochement between Russia and the EU, but this will take time and evolution on both sides, both politically and culturally.
The picture is complicated by the continued development of the Islamic and Hindu civilizational communities. Note that the video is Azerbaijani. Azerbaijan is now an ally of Turkey, which has its sights set on leadership of a pan-Turkic Islamic community.

(19,956 posts)Putin thinks Ukraine and other former SSRs should still belong to him despite already having the largest country on Earth by far. Clearly doesn't need Lebensraum.
Xi thinks Hong Kong and Taiwan should belong to him despite already having a huge country with the largest population on Earth. If he wants Lebensraum somebody better tell him that HK and Taiwan won't provide much of that. Better to go after Siberia.
Hitler apparently (stupidly) thought most of Europe and the USSR should belong to him in the name of Lebensraum despite not really needing the space for the rather limited German population.
Lust for MORE/BIGGER/MORE/BIGGER/MORE/BIGGER/MORE/BIGGER ???

(54,268 posts)He acts as if he feels that part of his great country was taken away from him personally, and he wants it back.
As heads of two great imperial powers that border on each other, Xi and Putin will never trust each other (neither did Hitler and Stalin), but that would never hinder them from temporary alliances of convenience, especially if there mere appearance of one is enough to freak out the EU and the USA.
Putin's barely hidden machinations in the UK to encourage Brexit were about as secret as a royal wedding in Westminster Abbey. Divide and conquer is neither new, nor ineffective.
