An Oregon man killed himself after mistakenly shooting dead his brother as he took aim at a bear, according to police.
Authorities say the man had grabbed his gun to protect himself from the black bear near his home in the state.
But instead, the man accidentally gunned down his sibling in the tragic incident in Sunny Valley in Josephine County.
Police responded after receiving a 911 call from a man who told them he had accidentally shot his brother while loading a gun to use against a bear.

(16,088 posts)A sad story but Im getting to the place of these like Covid tragedies. Just dont understand the desire to kill wildlife unless its to survive. Too many people getting killed on the hunt trips .

(24,303 posts)Without guns this would never have happened. Or maybe the bear would have killed them. I don't know.

(35,039 posts)As long as you aren't being an idiot, black bears will typically give humans wide berth.
And it wasn't starving, when police arrived later, there was no bear eating remains or refuse, it was long gone.
So I think he panicked and it was unfortunate he did.

(9,067 posts)Josephine County Undersheriff Travis Snyder said the man called 911 around 7 a.m. Tuesday and told dispatchers he had "accidentally shot his brother while loading a gun" after being startled by the bear.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports deputies went to the home in Sunny Valley, an unincorporated community off Interstate 5 in the southwest corner of the state. There they found a man dead from a gunshot wound.
Snyder said they checked the rural residence and found a second man dead. He had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was loading a gun...not sure where the bear was (he was in a house?), called 911 and then shot himself.
Hmmm....how do we know the bear didn't shoot someone?
