When people ask "where are the good Republicans?", I say, "they aren't Republican anymore."

They’ve moved into the Democratic Party big tent, or at the very least become Independent…a smaller and smaller number remain, fighting a steeply uphill battle against the extreme Reich-wing and Trump cultists who have come to dominate that party.

There are plenty of “I didn’t leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me” stories out there. I personally know multiple individuals for whom this description applies. They are still conservative, or at least somewhat right of center on most issues, but they are absolutely horrified at what has become of the Republican Party and they refuse to vote for it or identity with it nowadays.

Of course, the more that decent, principled Republicans are driven out of the GOP, the more that the GOP is dominated by the extremists and MAGA cultists, QAnon et al. And that, in turn, drives away even more of the decent Republicans. A vicious cycle, unfortunately.

I would welcome a center-right opposition party if it meant marginalizing the extremists to the point of irrelevancy. How can principled Republicans, or ex-Republicans, take back their party? How can Democrats help?
