A text message that 'all Asian people need to die' has Occidental College in an uproar

In late 2020, an Occidental College student sent a text message to a friend that read: “all asian people need to die.”

She followed with another text saying Asians are “responsible for the pandemic so they need to die for that too.”

A year later, in October or November, the friend reported the text exchange to Occidental officials and her sorority, setting off a controversy that has roiled the small liberal arts college in Eagle Rock, as students question what they see as a delayed and inadequate response from the administration.

On Tuesday, after a crescendo of complaints, Occidental College President Harry J. Elam Jr. said the student who sent the racist texts is no longer enrolled at the school and has “expressed remorse and regret for her actions.”

The worst part is that 40 or 50 years from now, many of these people will go to their graves never thinking that they ever said or wrote anything wrong.

This is not a brief cold the nation is suffering from, but a debilitating chronic disease for which there is so far no known cure.

giving excuses for doing nothing, rather doing what they could do, aggressively/proactively/creatively. They all just hid behind what they weren't allowed/supposed to do.

Well, fuck that, and fuck them.

You're not allowed to expel or discipline someone who says repugnant shit, for whatever reason? Okay, fine. Sorority bylaws, 1st Amendment, okay. Let's say that is true...

You want us to believe you are also restricted from immediately, and then repeatedly, issuing public statements on behalf of your institution which refute/invert/contradict those repugnant texts?... Hmm?... Well, why didn't you?

Why didn't you do reaffirm your institution's supposed values every fucking day until everyone believed you that you were disavowing this ugliness, despite your limited room to maneuver on the discipline issue?
