DU4 Update: Text editor and Subscriptions
This week we added a brand new feature to DU4. It's a small thing -- and completely optional -- but we think some of you might find it pretty useful. I'm going to say upfront that because this new feature is located in a position where an ad would normally appear, this feature will be for Star Members only.
The feature is called Notes, and it gives you the ability to add your own notes to an OP. This works on any OP (whether you posted it or not). Your notes are not shown to other members -- when you add a note, only you can read it.
It works by clicking the button show here:
This opens a little scratchpad, where you can add your note:
After writing your note (it scrolls, so you can write as much as you want), hit Save and the note will be attached to that OP. Whenever you return to the OP, the note will be there. You can edit it at any time in the future by just typing something new in the box and hitting Save, and you can delete it by removing all the text and hitting Save.
Saving a note automatically bookmarks the thread. You can then find your notes on your Bookmarks page, where's there's a new column to indicate whether a thread has a note or not.
Speaking of Bookmarks, we have made an improvement to this page by separating the page up into four sections: Bookmarks in chronological order (the default view, same as DU3), Bookmarks by date, Bookmarks by forum, and Notes. The first three options are available on DU3, but they're all on one page and if you have a lot of bookmarks it can take a long time to load.
"Chronological" view is shown in the image above, and here's "By Date" which allows you to browse through the years and months that you bookmarked threads:
Here's "By Forum":
Finally, "Notes" shows your bookmarks in chronological order, but only the ones with notes attached:
I'll add my usual caveat which is that we still have a long way to go before this is all ready to launch, but as you can see, it's coming along and we hope you enjoy getting a look at the progress we're making.
Oh and of course I'd be missing the opportunity for a shameless plug if I didn't mention that this week is our Hearts fund drive.
Thanks for reading!

(3,815 posts)of having our profile histories being universal? What I mean is when I've read a post/thread, the action is tied to my profile rather than the browser I'm using at the time.
I move around to different computers sometimes and it's a bit of a hassle that none of my previous activity is visible on a different computer. I use quite a few other forums and they all use standard forum software templates which allow for this. It makes things a lot more convenient for those of us who use different computers to access the site. Not sure if it's possible but thought I'd ask.

by the way i clicked on the "ask me anything" link in the OP and was refused entry.
I messed my links up. Fixed now -- thanks for noticing.
There's a video at the bottom of this OP which shows how subscribing to people will work on DU4:

(4,164 posts)I have always wanted to remind myself why I saved articles. They always seemed important for one reason or another, but now i can't remember. (Heavy sigh)
I can't wait for this.
