Pfizer-BioNTech is postponing its rolling application to the Food and Drug Administration to expand the use of its two-dose Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years.
The move means that vaccines for this age group will not be available in the coming weeks, a setback for parents eager to vaccinate their young children.
Pfizer said on Friday that it will wait for its data on a three-dose series of the vaccine, because it believes three doses "may provide a higher level of protection in this age group." Data on the third dose is expected in early April, the company said.
Pfizer said in December that two doses didnt generate a strong enough immune response in its trial of children ages 2 to 4. For young children, Pfizers vaccine has a dosage of 3 micrograms. For children ages 5 to 11, the dosage is higher, at 10 micrograms.

(8,017 posts)1. I guess it's because they have to give lower doses to the younger kids, so they're going to need mor
doses. That sucks for the toddlers.

(8,171 posts)2. Dammit! They should still go forward for the 6mos-2 years (I assume there is some weight parameters
in this). Especially if they only need the 2 doses instead of the 3 which I believe Pfizer stated a month or so ago.
So frustrating.
My 9 mos old granddaughter just got over Covid 3 weeks ago, MA gov has removed masks at school starting Feb 28 and my daughter is a teacher.
Have no idea how long natural immunity lasts but I do not want her to get it again! (She got it at daycare, then a week after she got back she got conjunctivitis at daycare - this is a nightmare!)
