You can blame NanceGreggs for this, her post inspired me to start more discussions.
Why? Because complaining about Merrick Garland or the DOJ or whatever doesn't win elections. What wins elections is registering new voters & working our butts off to get out the vote. That's on us. WE are the grassroots force that has the power to decide elections, if we choose to put in the hard work to make it happen. We did it in 2020 & we can do it again this year if we put our collective energy & effort into it.
So, in what I hope will be the first of several ongoing posts by me on the subject, I'm going to share some recent tweets by Teri Kanefield @Teri_Kanefield :
Lately, I've been suggesting joining @MichelleObama's organization @WhenWeAllVote as voting squad captain: https://whenweallvote.org/votingsquad/

Volunteering lets you be productive and connect with like-minded people.
Volunteering beats doomscrolling.
It's better for your sanity.
It's better for democracy.
It's the best Do Something Twitter.
I practice what I preach: I did a volunteer shift today on a voter protection hotline.

(46,023 posts)I took voters calls in NC on the helpline. I was pretty worried because I don't live in NC and wasn't familiar with their laws. I was given some training, and there was instant online help while I was working. Turned out the calls were pretty simple, and I was able to direct folks to their registrar of voters.
Later I made calls in GA to support our two Senate candidates. Most people don't answer the phone. Occasionally, you'll get someone irate that you're bothering them, but for the most part, it was fine.
My favorite work was against the recall in CA. Because I live in CA, I felt well armed to answer questions. Many people I spoke to thanked me for doing what I was doing. Very satisfying all around.
I made calls for Terry McAuliffe in VA. Here, they did ask me at one point to make calls on subjects I wasn't prepared in, so I ended my participation there.
I've been frustrated for years because my vote didn't make much of a difference. My state and district were always going to elect good people, Dems. So I decided to reach out to other states where I could make a difference. We didn't win NC, but we did win GA. And we blew the CA recall out of the water.
All you have to do is find your local or national Democratic committee. They will put you to work.

(4,538 posts)You just spelled out all the stuff that I find scary and made it seem doable.
I live in NY and Im in NY-21 which is Elise Stefaniks haunting grounds, although she never bothers to visit. I think maybe when I get back from NC in the spring, I will have to contact my local Democratic hq and see what I can do for us to oust Elise. That would be amazing!
Thanks!

(46,023 posts)Until I typed all that out, I didn't realize how much I'd done. I was soooo happy to work on the recall.
I generally don't do as much as some volunteers, so you don't have to be doing it every day to help. Just sign up for a shift here and there. You are appreciated.
