WaPo trying hard to skirt responsibility for their lack of critical coverage of TFG in 2016 or his theft of classified documents after leaving the White House.
Doing so now is warranted because of the discovery that former president Donald Trump moved a significant number of documents some of them marked classified to his home in Florida after he left office. That report has drawn understandable comparisons to the coverage of Clinton, coverage that, in fact, likely did contribute to her loss. But those comparisons are also often overly neat, which is to say overly simple. Given the importance of understanding both situations, clarification seems useful.
If your instinct is to roll your eyes and dismiss this idea out of hand, Id offer that you might be among those for whom this exercise is most illuminating. So I ask for the benefit of the doubt that, often, Clinton herself was not granted.
:snip:
Two things made the situation worse for Clinton than it needed to be. One was that Clintons team at first treated the story dismissively, in a way that often antagonized reporters whose job it is to challenge those in power. The other was the way in which the material turned over from Clinton to the State Department was handled.

Sheesh, no wonder this country is in such deep trouble right now.
I normally like Bump, but this is just tortured logic. And he knows it.

(25,437 posts)Last week saw Ro Khanna interviewed, talked about his economic plans for Appalachia and said something about Democrats not having any plans and the host interjected, "Hillary did." Yes, she did.
Everybody ignored her detailed policy plans and called her names, turned a do-gooder Methodist working for women and children her whole career into an evil cartoon villain with fake scandals and conspiracy theories while a truly evil Trump villain with an endless supply of real scandals was right there. I'll never forget, day after the election saw ABC News for the first time ever put the policy positions of the two parties on screen. David Muir looked uncomfortable. Should've thought of that before, idiots.

(6,008 posts)... they're mistaking "regurgitating right wing talking points" with "challenging those in power"
and "expecting reporters to meet minimal standards of journalism" with "antagonizing the media"
