It was that ignorance which created opportunities for his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, to make vast fortunes.
They walked into unpaid jobs at the White House with very troubled finances. They walked out having made at least $172m from outside activities and possibly as much as $640m. During his last year on his father-in-laws staff, Jared also set up a holding company in a Caribbean tax haven.

One year after Trump left the presidency, how they did this still poses serious questions about the intersection of their financial interests and US national security, as Ive explored for my new book TheUnless there is another Trump presidency, however, the couple are unlikely to ever again enjoy the same kinds of openings for naked money-making. We can see how his administration provided one of Ivankas investments: her slice of her fathers Washington hotel. In the first three years of his presidency, it made her $13m, she disclosed in ethics reports.
Ivankas last report contained a revealing change, however. She had valued her share of the hotel at between $5m and $25m. But in 2020, she dropped the value to $100,000 to $250,000 indicating that with her father leaving the White House, the hotels value plummeted because no one needed to stay there to pay tribute to Trump.

(33,424 posts)Kushner did not come into the White House with "very troubled finances". He was worth $800 million. Before he came to the White House one of his business partners was George Soros.

(17,459 posts)I'd been led to believe that the 'troubles' were with the 'legalities' regarding properties and how they were being run.
I think 'the family' saw the 'White House' as a means to make all of those 'troubles' go away.
GAWD, I hope the all FRY!!!!!!!

(17,459 posts)I do think you are correct - they DID need some more $$$$ to buy up half of the town - and they used their new 'power' (the 'power' of the Presidency) to lean on some lenders.
That same 'power' got them special 'business' deals (Princess in China) and 'occupants' at 'their' hotel in DC.
And yes, it was all a part of the giant GRIFT that we gave them license to work!!!!

(33,424 posts)My finances are not troubled in the least. Most people don't deplete their assets when buying major purchases. They use other people's money. Especially when buying as a company.

(33,216 posts)that he wanted to pursue impeachment of Trump for violation of the Emoluments clause in the Constitution, but he says there was no appetite for it among Democratic leadership. As a Constitutional scholar, Raskin thought there was practically an iron clad case against TFG. No surprise that Kushner and Ivanka would be grifting like crazy while Daddy was in office.
