what's going on with cat food that the stores seem to never have anymore. Empty shelves. Does anyone know why wet cat food is almost impossible to find?
Enlighten me

(15,243 posts)I suspect the cats of America have been hoarding it. Just not yours or mine.

(4,131 posts)changing the subject. I have this cat that lives under my barn. She/he is a beautiful black cat that can't be a year old.
I leave food by the whole I see her go under but I would like to catch the cat and bring it into my home. Any tips on how to do this?
from your post you seem to be the right person to ask

(19,904 posts)Trap, get him/her fixed and keep feeding and get her used to you. Then open door and feed inside just where she can see it. They gotta trust before they'll come in. But get her fixed first! THANKS!

(27,823 posts)Finding dry food isn't an issue, though, so I'm skeptical.
I'm down to my last 2 cans of food for the ferals. I've still got a nice stock of pate for my guys but, fortunately, Madoc and Gryff are satisfied with kibble, even though I do give them a little pate, twice a day. More often than not, Gryff ignores his portion so Madoc gobbles it up.

(19,334 posts)You can order wet food from Amazon, no problem, but the grocery stores seem to be rationing the stuff.

(22,364 posts)I buy only certain brands so I have not kept up with what is going on with other brands. My experience is that Fancy Feast is having problems but not other brands.
My guess is that Fancy Feast is having supply problems of some kind.

(47,365 posts)As he is old and picky about his food, I have to get fancy feast. I have been getting it off amazon.

(4,131 posts)amazon as it is. I try not to order from them because I don't want retail shopping to become extinct. I think I'm losing that battle

(13,107 posts)And I do her ordering as she is in 90's. I use subscribe and save from Amazon because she gets things monthly. But they have back ordered and canceled cat food many times. Where I find it is Walmart. Few times online but mostly they want you to pick up in person so she has her shuttle take her there.
Chewy has it now but you have to order a lot to get free shipping.

(4,402 posts)Mine is hooked on it. Refuses anything else. The fancy feast shelves are always empty.

(13,582 posts)None of the local stores had any. Now the shelves are stocked with the stuff. I wonder how long that will last. In a way, Im glad its not just me in my little town. Now I wonder if the shortages are based in can shortages, Trump trucker convoys, or manufacturers creating a plausible excuse for jacking prices?

(53,561 posts)There was a sign on the empty shelves last week about supply chain issues, but I don't know how many times I've seen bare shelves and then gone home and ordered 2 cases of the same thing from Chewy. Great service from them, too, by the way. I think I'm one of their best nonpaid spokespeople, especially after they donated tens of thousands of dollars worth of products to the local humane society shelter.

(34,749 posts)Some of it is due to things like labor shortages and weather-related issues. But, I firmly believe they're creating shortages in order to gouge us. As long as everyone is willing to keep handing over their money, they're going to keep on creating "shortages" and gouging us. Which, then, encourages hoarding...

(26,782 posts)I used to buy it at Kroger's, but their shelves were empty several visits in a row. I'd rather support them, but alas, had to go tho PSP.

(25,961 posts)My male cat has cystitis bad, like he would die without his rx food. Chewy and PetSmart are both out of the best kind for him, but luckily there is another kind that also works for him, just not quite as good. But now with this food there is no room for error, I can tell the crystals problem is worse than with the regular food, but luckily he's still able to go - although with a definite reduction in flow.
i have found major differences in grocery stores. Our usual one, Publix, has almost no dry or soft food, while the Winn Dixie which is closer actually has 3x the dry food and 2x the wet food. WinnDixie had more dry cat food than PetSmart last week. So call around, you might find what your kitty wants somewhere else?

(130,497 posts)always short on the canned stuff. . The small cans. Yet, when I go to the pet store next door, there is no shortage of small cans in many varieties. Alas, my guy does not like any of them, and very few of the pouches. Thank goodness he likes poached chicken, turkey, bacon, etc.

(25,207 posts)Around here, the individual cans are scarce, but there are cases of 12 and 24 cans that seem to be plentiful.

(20,661 posts)been an issue for my own cat - she happily slurps up the gravy from any flavor, and leaves the meaty bits behind for the most part.

(34,749 posts)The same companies who process your meat process the meat that goes into pet food. There are issues due to their cheap labor getting sick from COVID, and their being unable to find more cheap labor to replace them. There is also a bunch of gouging. Like every other industry, they're jacking up prices, and they will continue to do so as long as we're willing to keep forking over our money to them. I have no doubt there's also a bunch of hoarding going on, too.
