'Speechless.' Middle-schoolers assault high school baseball coach, Texas video shows

https://www.yahoo.com/news/speechless-middle-schoolers-assault-high-163024358.html

A Texas baseball coach was chased and beaten by a group of middle-school students in an act of retaliation against him, news outlets report.

The attack was captured on cell phone video now circulating on social media, and shows a Houston high school employee running from four students, who can be seen punching the man and knocking him to the ground.

Officials with Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District confirmed to TV station KTRK that the assault took place at Langham Creek High School on Feb. 10.

The attackers are students at Aragon Middle School, the outlet reported, and the victim is Michael Shott, an assistant baseball coach and physics teacher at Langham Creek High School.

(Excerpt)

It seems he'd told the students they couldn't ride dirt bikes or ATVs on school grounds.

that they can apparently ride around at will, unsupervised. They will likely see nothing wrong with their kids trying to ride them on school grounds to begin with.

The kids could be younger than 13. I just picked that as a likely age.

That could actually end his ability to do that job.

First, they need to confiscate those ATVs and dirt bikes. Not letting them ride them at all till they learn how to respect people and spaces while doing it would be the best way to address this. Make them take some classes in how to use them.

They should go without their ATVs as long as he goes without use of his arm (or longer, but that's a starting point).

Did they or did they not attack an adult? Should there not be consequences because of their race or his? Facts are facts. They did it. Their racial background has nothing to do with it.

That said, I'm not in favor of simply chucking them in the pokey from the word go. Clearly there are some issues going on in their lives, since this behavior is most certainly abnormal. I think social services needs to get involved, including some psychological and psychiatric attention for these kids.

I don't know the family situations of any of these kids, but if they feel entitled to the point that a teacher asking them to take their ATVs somewhere else should be targeted for assault, something's gone wrong at home.

They should be taken out of school for everyone else's protection right now. And that's a shame, because they probably need education more than anything else. This is why I hope they can eventually return to school, and that the parents should shoulder the blame for this.

I should add - if their parents can afford ATVs for their kids, they can afford to cover this teacher's medical expenses and salary for the next few years.
