And he put away a lot of powerful criminals so he can read the direction something is going, and through the windmills in his mind, he must realize that 1. Trump's not going to pay him what Trump owes him and thus 2. he doesn't have the money to mount any kind of defense. So he's going to try to ask for some sort of immunity to throw Trump under the bus, otherwise, Number 2 might see him the gray-bar hotel.

RG made his bones (see what I did there) getting a massive set of convictions in the "Commission Trial".
But, the massive infiltration of the mob by Joe Pistons (aka Donnie Brasco) gave inside information, plus RICO, that made that case a slam dunk.
They could have only screwed it up, which they did not.
I don't think his reputation as a mob crusher is warranted because Pistone's information basically made the case for the prosecution.
