OTTAWA Residents here took to the streets Sunday to physically block the movement of the Freedom Convoy protesters that have overrun the city for more than two weeks.
This public backlash is sparked in part by reports of concerts, hot tubs, and bouncy castles in the downtown core occupied by anti-vaccine mandate protesters. One group of residents crowded the street to blockade a convoy of around 20 cars and pickup trucks in southern Ottawa, holding it up for several hours.
The straw broke last night. The patience of our various communities broke, said Joel Harden, the provincial representative for Ottawa Centre. He said the anti-protest blockade came together on community Facebook groups usually dedicated to organizing cookouts, dog walking, and kid meetups.
I hope the convoy knows theyre not welcome in our city anymore. They made their point, its time to go, he said.
The convoy had been planning to drive along the Rideau River before meeting up with the larger protest site downtown. There was some discussion and arguing as their path was blocked, but mostly the two sides kept to themselves. Resident groups also popped up in downtown streets to physically block thoroughfares leading to the protest zone. They say that businesses are suffering and people who are just trying to go about their daily lives are being harassed.
Ottawans are just fed up. Were done. Ill tell you, something popped yesterday, said Micah Clark, who has lived in Ottawa for 16 years. Were just trying to live our lives, and our citys been turned into a punching bag by a bunch of people who didnt do real well in civics class.

(65,227 posts)8th graders spend the whole year on American history 1750-2000.
Along the way, the constitution of both the country & the state are taught.
There's a test per quarter, but the 4th quarter is the statewide Constitution test.
They can't graduate & go to high school without passing it. (There are an appeals & alternative process options, but they're not easy to get through.)
The test covers a lot of the basics of democracy that you & I would have called civics back in the day.
It's pretty comprehensive.
I just subbed a couple of 8th grade social studies class in the last couple weeks.
One was working on the end of WWII but the problems were class work. Homework was the study guide for Article II of the constitution.
The other class was on the robber baron era, but they all had copies of a 6x9 soft cover book that was the workbook for the Constitution test.
It's taken pretty seriously here.

Getting a good grade in it was a big deal for nearly every kid, no matter what grades they go in everything else.

I wonder if these vaccine snowflakes would like to take their convoy over to the Ukraine and do some real work. You know maybe they could surround the Ukraine capital and protect it from losing its freedom to Russia. Nah, that's too scary for them.
Only in a democratic nation can you get away with this stupidity. Try it on Russia Koch Bros.

(17,199 posts)We have made a plan to consolidate our protest efforts around Parliament Hill. We will be working hard over the next 24 hours to get buy in from the truckers. We hope to start repositioning our trucks on Monday, organizer Tamara Lynch wrote in a letter to Watson, released by his office Sunday.
Its not clear if this will actually happen. The area directly in front of Parliament Hill is already clogged with protest vehicles. There is no fine line between the downtown core and residential areas in the center of the city.
Isn't that nice? They "struck a deal" and they're "working to get buy-in" from the cretins. Very considerate and civilized. But I can see this going sideways real quick if someone lights the fuse.
