(3,635 posts)and fitting to start with Dre and Snoop being that the game was hosted in LA.
Dre, Snoop, 50, Mary J, Eminem ...
These artists are all 'real' hardcore legends who made their way up from the bottom - not corporate confections like most of what music is today.

(291 posts)Its way past time, given how many young African-American athletes are in the NFL.
As a musician, I appreciate hip hop as poetry melded with music as a viable art form.
Fine if not everyone favors it, but for me theres something about the beat and the dancing that makes me glad young people seem a bit more discerning about what counts as entertainment vs. what was dished up to us as flower children.
luvs2sing

(153,226 posts)but then when I started actually listening to the lyrics I found a lot of it very and clever indeed
PatSeg
(47,653 posts)but I find the redundant beat annoying and for me, it is hard to listen to. I have hearing problems and one of the hardest things to listen to is rap. Lyrics set to a harmony tend to be easier for me to retain.
Skittles
(153,226 posts)I have misophonia, and repeated noise drives me nuts....I can listen to a song or two but that's it. Actually, that is pretty much true of all music for me, I've never had the patience to listen to an entire album.
PatSeg
(47,653 posts)That is true of some overly simplistic pop music as well. The worst is probably having a neighbor who plays very loud music with the bass cranked up where all you hear is the beat, but no melody or lyrics.

PatSeg
(47,653 posts)I had neighbors who played really loud music, but it was my friend above them who got the worst of it. Mary J Blige is talented, but as to the rest, all hiphop/rap is derivative of Tupac Shakur, and he's been dead more than a quarter century.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,981 posts)That's just not true. I mean, just for starters, you are ignoring Sugerhill Gang and The Last Poets. Not to mention a lot of other groups before him, people contemporary to him that did different styles, and new artists after.
Was he a huge influence on those that came after? Of course. So say all is derivative of him is just wrong.
WHITT
(2,868 posts)I'm not ignoring them, they just didn't have the widespread popularity and crossover early on.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,981 posts)Everyone is derivative of those two.
Additionally, your statement doesn't take into consideration the other regional styles of rap that developed at the same time as Tupac and were different.

(578 posts)and it's just now that you realized it. All of these music artists that performed tonight I have listened to them since I was a teenager. Which goes back over 20 plus years ago. WarGamer
(12,488 posts)But didn't like the performance.
First, the stage was set up to be viewed by only half the stadium.
Two, the audio mix was off... none of their voices were clear.
Three, Dre and 50 Cent don't have the same kind of power they used to...
The pre-game singers were A+++ though.
I give Shakira/JLO a much better grade from 2020.

WarGamer
(12,488 posts)LOVE how in Miami they have JLO and Shakira and Snoop and Dre in LA...
RockRaven
(15,037 posts)I didn't care much about half of it. And the part I did care about was more interesting for unfamiliar lyrics (due to the FCC and also changing sensibilities) than for the performance itself.
That said, there was a part of me which wanted to like it because Dre and Snoop are from Compton and Long Beach respectively and so doing a Superbowl (that the LA team is playing in) halftime show in Inglewood might have a certain poignancy for them that a random artist in a random Superbowl city would not have. All in all, though, meh. It was okay, but not moving. They rarely are though.
My favorite part, which was in some ways pointless or unimportant, was the way the aerial image of LA on the ground underneath the structures and dancers.
IngridsLittleAngel
(1,962 posts)I DJ online, and play music that was recorded decades ago. I've more than once made the joke "People ask me: Do you remember the 70's and 80's? Well, I sure as hell don't remember anything since then!"
But that said, I need to do what I often do best and be the turd in the punch bowl. I didn't watch the game (ex-football fan, and ironically, I was a Rams fan when I watched football), and I wouldn't have watched the Halftime Show if someone had paid me a million dollars.
I am more than a bit disturbed that the NFL, which claims (falsely) that they're taking women's issues and domestic violence seriously, allowed three singers with very disturbing histories of misogyny and homophobia to take the stage today.
Snoop has recently been sued on allegations of sexual assault, has a long list of calling women "bitches" and "hoes", and has called Gayle King a "dog-haired bitch", among many things in his rather checkered life.
Dr. Dre has been accused of beating Dee Barnes, Michelle and Lisa Johnson - the latter two being mothers of some of his children.
Eminem is infamous for his use of homophobic and transphobic slurs in his music, along with the emotional abuse he inflicted upon his ex-wife - both directly to her, and in his lyrics ("Kim" and "'97 Bonnie & Clyde".), along with famously beating up a blow-up doll resembling his now ex-wife during a concert.
All three have also used their lyrics to attack the LGBTQ community more than once.
Look, I get it. Black History Month. Los Angeles. Hip Hop. But you couldn't have found singers with a far better track record when it comes to women and LGBTQ's? Knowing the disturbing history of all three of these performers, I was - and still am - deeply offended with giving them the spotlight on worldwide television.
Do better, Calvin, Andre and Marshall. Do better, NFL. Yes, I'm offended. Sorry, world.

I understand why people might not get into it (I am not a huge fan of the genre, either), but I would caution anyone away from questioning the authenticity of the genre.
