Except the NFL says that's not true:
Responding to media reports that Eminem kneeled in defiance of the football league,
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told USA TODAY that such claims are false.
"We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that," McCarthy said. "A player or coach could have taken a knee and there would have been no repercussions, so there was no reason to tell an artist she or he could not do so."
A representative for Eminem did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment,
and the rapper has not addressed his gesture on social media.

(17,302 posts)But several years ago there would have been a scathing memo. The NFL doesn't get out ahead of issues very well, obviously.

(14,959 posts)The NFL almost always says the self-serving thing regardless of the facts of the matter.
That said, it would have been dumb and/or pointless for them to try to direct him thusly (or even counterproductive, see also RATM on BBC or The Doors on Ed Sullivan). Most likely they wanted as little attention on this aspect as possible and so didn't make a fuss. The NFL probably doesn't care much except insofar as a portion of their viewers will get irrationally angry. All the more reason not to draw extra attention to it, there's plenty of other stuff going on during halftime and during the game to occupy one's attention or conversation.

I knew when I posted it there would be people who denied it.
You got your believers and you got your non-believers.

(14,959 posts)not a trustworthy information source in scenarios like this. And that is a well earned status on their part.
That doesn't mean I believe their statement is necessarily false, just that it isn't useful information. I don't know any more about the truth of the matter after reading the statement than if they hadn't released a statement at all.

That's why there are flat earthers today.

Eminem doesn't need the NFL.
There are no consequences. They weren't going to have him do next year, anyway.
What I find most concerning is that social media is so readily accepted, despite continents of provable mis & dis information, that the NFL felt they needed to address it.
