Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) introduced H.R. 6708, the Student Loan Relief Bill, that would allow the Secretary of Education to forgive up to $25,000 in federal student loans for borrowers.
The Student Loan Relief Bill would provide an estimated $775.5 billion in debt relief for over 45.4 million Americans and forgive nearly half of student debt held by individuals.
We know education can change a persons means and access to wealth, stated Congressman Gonzalez. Pursuing higher education should not require students and families to jeopardize their financial stability or futures. I am proud to introduce this legislation and take this major step to prevent this crushing debt from stifling the American Dream.
Americans currently owe over $1.6 trillion in student loans which is twice the amount in 2008. Over 70% of students are taking out loans to accommodate the skyrocketing cost of higher education. Student loan debt is limiting Americans' ability to own a home, save for retirement or care for family.
Congressman Gonzalez held debt as a law school graduate and understands the difficulties students experience when taking out and paying off student loans. He will continue to pursue solutions and fight for working class students and families.

Congressman Gonzalez actually introduced this bill on Friday, February 11.

He recognizes the need for legislation to forgive most of the outstanding student debt, not "the stroke of a pen."
No cosponsors as of yet.

(15,775 posts)Perhaps put tuition control on all colleges especially Ivys which are ridiculous in price. Government needs to get involved in tuition rates ASAP!

(67,782 posts).....eliminated tuition for state colleges. Several other states have that in the works.

That's the big difference between pre-Reagan and now universities don't get the funding they once did.

Talkers talk, Dems do the work.
Watch who shifts from blaming Biden, to quickly taking credit when Rep Gonzales succeeds.
Watch who co-sponsors it.

(15,325 posts)At least Gonzales did the proper work to get a bill that would go before the Dept of Ed.
So cosponsor his bill & put as much effort into getting it passed as spouting on media that this is somehow Biden's quick sig on an ExOrder to just fix.
Because that is false
They should know that.

(16,950 posts)U betcha. No context is needed for these Tweets but blame Biden.
Some were really worried about factual Tweets from another Twitter account yesterday, but not today, it seems.

George II
(67,782 posts)He has said at times that given enabling legislation (not an exact quote) he would cancel more. He also said that he'd go up to $50K for some IF he had legislation that allowed him to do so.
No, he won't veto Gonzalez' bill. The good thing about Gonzalez is he's not talking about it, he's not tweeting about it, he's DOING it.
Now where are all the cosponsors?

(68,552 posts)situation...those who want debt relief will be pissed when it doesn't happen and it most likely won't happen. I can't imagine any GOP voting for this. And those who don't want it to happen...maybe they paid off their loans or just don't believe debt should be forgiven...I am not sure all of them are right-winger either, will be pissed that an attempt was made to cancel student debt. If we had a fighting chance to pass this bill, I would think it a great idea...but I just don't see how it can happen with 50-50 senate.
