General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe've never really given enough thought to how stupid it was not to elect Hillary President
There have been various thought streams like this one of what life under President Hillary Clinton would have been like. But with all the ruckus and turmoil Trump brought us in the past four years, have we really realized what a stupid mistake this country made? I don't just mean stupid. I mean STUPID STUPID!
A big (and obvious one) is that we'd have been much closer to controlling Covid-19 because she would have taken positive measures to control it immediately. Unlike Dumb Donald and his more casual approach. In so many other areas -- racial injustice, voting rights and health care, to name three -- she would have shown competency rather than act like a bumbling fool like the Orange Gibbon did. And it's likely the Trumptons wouldn't have gained as much power as they did with an Adminstration that wouldn't have coddled to them.
So many things too numerous to mention. Repughs will do everything to bypass the idea, but you and I know history will be brutal to Dumb Donald. As it should be. He will be, in my mind, the worst president in this nation's history. Hopefully he'll never be in a position where he can create more damage ever again.
If you pray, pray hard, folks. And thank God Hillary can still have some effect on history. Not maybe what she should have, but proof that she was the leader we should have gotten in 2016.

(30,613 posts)Most people consider that the beginning of the collapse of America. I think we've obsessed on it nonstop. But it really is time to move forward, prosecute Trump, clean up our politics, and save the world. Or die trying. Ruminating on the past helps nobody.

(11,760 posts)Abstractions about what could have happened are just that, abstractions. Thinking about what might have happened if Hillary would have been elected won't get them their next paycheck. It doesn't do their taxes for them.
I know what you are saying and completely agree with you. Problem is that the people on DU are not the "general public". We, by virtue of our presence here, AT LEAST have more than a passing interest in politics and policy.
I have relatives who cannot name their own mayor, local district and state representatives, etc... They sure know who's showing up to Spring Training, who is likely headed in to March Madness, who is winning the Indy Cup or the NASCAR circuit cup. They know all the gossip around Dua Lipa or the latest episode of Squid Games or the like.
The question is "How do we get the 'general public' to be more interested in monitoring the people who make the laws and policies that affect them?" How do we get the general public to understand what budgets reflect more than they focus on who the "sexiest celebrity" is?

Think how much different things would be w/o Dubya?
Maybe no 9/11, no Iraq invasion and just maybe some climate progress.

(50,572 posts)If Gore - Clintons terrorism expert - would have received the same PDB Bush did, there would have been immediate action: a notification would have gone out to every airport in America if anyone shows up at your airport to board a flight, and they act unusually nervous, are carrying no luggage and have one-way tickets, detain for questioning. The hijackers would have been taken aside and the reporting of the days events would have been a six-column-inch story on page A6 that no one would have read anyway.

(15,670 posts)involved direct interference by a foreign nation in collaboration with TFG and his campaign. Im not even certain in my mind that Hillary didnt actually win given the extent of corrupt and illicit lengths the GOP will go to take a State and ultimately the electoral college. Hillary won the popular vote by far. I suspect TFG was right about the election was rigged in 2016. But lacking real evidence of fraudulent vote counts, Obama, Hillary and the Democratic Party fully supported a smooth and efficient transfer of power.

We'd still have a a robust middle class and a tax code that is more fair than it is now.
We'd probably be a world leader in renewable energy.
So much more.
Reagan was the beginning, TFG was just the latest in a line of right wingers working to destroy our society.

Many of us think about it almost every day, and from 2016 to 2020? I would dare to say, EVERY F^&ING DAY!
Sorry Autumn, didn't read the responses before I posted...but, nonetheless, great minds think alike...

(15,224 posts)In fact, Ive literally been sick because of thinking about it. We could have been SO far ahead - not only with COVID, but climate change, racism, sexism, equality, the economy - you name it. It was the opportunity for real change by putting a smart, strong WOMAN in charge and I listened to several men whose only reservation about voting for her was because she is a woman.
Im tired of idiots, but Im even more tired of someone being an idiot and being excused for it. Those idiots changed the course of not only MY life, but the course of this country, and I will never forgive them.

(5,463 posts)that a known character - be it actor, politician, cult figure - would make a good leader.
Actors like Reagan and Schwarzenegger - unknown quantities once they enter politics.
Business people - like Trump, the same.
And the focus on gender and skin color - why?
Anyone without a personal grudge or axe to grind would have seen Hillary had the experience and skills to do a good job as POTUS.
But . . . gender, Bill's 'history' got a big beat-up!
So vote for Trump, because he has been in a mediocre TV show, and talks himself up all the time?
How did that choice turn out, America?
Rest of the world is still wondering why President H. Clinton never happened.
Experience and proven competence over-ride gender and color considerations all the time. But not in America, it seems.

(12,881 posts)That should have been obvious to all rational people from the start.
This isn't about Hillary or even TFG.
It's about a serious deficit in the mindset of nearly half the American people and the media which "informs" them.
