Ted Cruz just told a judicial nominee in her Judiciary Committee hearing -- a 20-year lawyer for the Innocence Project -- that "skyrocketing crime rates, homicide rates, burglary rates, carjacking rates" are ALL the direct result of policies she's spent her life advocating.
This nominee, Nina Morrison, has been lead or co-counsel in cases that have freed more than 30 innocent people from prison and death row.
Cruz over here pinning all crimes on a 20-year lawyer for the Innocence Project.
Nina Morrison is Biden's pick for a lifetime seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Every Republican in this hearing so far is targeting Morrison for some reason.
The 2 other district court nominees in here are just chillin as GOPers direct all their Qs to Morrison.
This is the person Ted Cruz is blaming for all the crimez in America
Schumer introduced Morrison in her hearing.
He described her as "an attorney who has dedicated the bulk of her career to representing those who could not speak for themselves, and more precisely those wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not commit."
Hawley now up, rattling off stats about homicides and carjackings to Morrison.
"Skyrocketing" used again.
"Murders," "throwing rocks," "gasoline," "assault," "looters," "rioting"...
Hawley over here just saying a string of scary words about crimes as Morrison sits there.
"I cannot support your nomination" or anyone else who is soft on crime, Hawley dramatically declares, because it is a "pattern with this administration."
We are talking about an Innocence Project attorney here. Who has helped free 30+ innocent people from prison and death row.
Morrison is like Wonder Woman in this hearing, using her metal bracelets to deflect all these questions about crime rates that have nothing to do with her.
In what felt like a subtle burn, she said that in Ted Cruz's home state, *Republicans* unanimously passed a law named after one of her former clients to help wrongly accused people access exculpatory evidence in cases with proven misconduct.

Replying to @jbendery
Tom Cotton now competing here for most offensive claims and questions to Morrison.
"Are you proud that you encouraged such defiance in convicted murderers?" he asks her, referring to a man executed in Arkansas who made a snarky comment to a warden before being put to death.

@jbendery
Morrison had noted there was "significant" DNA evidence that this man who was executed, Ledell Lee, was innocent.
Cotton knew this, but just kept describing the details of the heinous crimes he was found guilty of.

(14,642 posts)coming from the party who allowed the mob turd to get away with a years-long crime spree and still would vote for him in a NY minute. The hypocrisy is strong with the GQP, for sure.

(11,736 posts)Austerity, income inequality, urban blight from lack of investment in communities, THAT is what drives crime. When people do not have a means to support themselves, to form and belong to a community, and to feel like their lives matter, they will turn to whatever means they can to survive.
This is not condoning criminal activity. It is explaining what factors lead people to think that engaging in activities that are against the law, are justified. It is about survival to many, about gaining some sort of power.
If we invested in making sure that everyone was housed, had a job that met their needs and offered some luxuries, created community by offering social services like childcare, community centers, recreation, etc..., provided services and education about mental health and wellness, offered universal access to medical, dental, vision, and other healthcare; that would not eliminate all crime, but it would SIGNIFICANTLY cut it down and allow the police to focus on people who engaged in criminal activity for "fun" or out of some pathology.

(14,966 posts)refutations. Their questions/comments are designed to be clipped for use -- individually or in a montage -- by FOXNews and their ilk. What is said before and after by the witness/nominee will never be seen by the intended audience. The Repukes aren't asking questions because they seek an answer, they are giving a little performance for the camera which has a specific future use in mind. Getting clowned on by some pundits is just the cost of film production for this scene.

(12,422 posts)So I would say the long-term effect of the Innocence Project would be for law enforcement to make sure they found the real perp. Every time an innocent person goes down for someone else's crime we are less safe.

Fear of blacks. Fear of Gays. Fear of immigrants. Fear of the others.
