In the wake of a Justice Department filing declaring that National Guard troops can form and join unions while serving on state active duty orders, a growing number of Texas troops assigned to the U.S.-Mexico border for Operation Lone Star have organized under an existing public sector union.
The first meeting of the Texas State Employees Unions Military Caucus, which consists of troops on state active duty orders assigned to the border, is scheduled for next week, according to a soldier leading organizing efforts. The soldier requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation from Texas Military Department leadership ahead of the meeting.

I don't think Abbott expected this when he pulled his political stunt of sending Guard troops to the border.

(1,730 posts)but why not if they're under state control?
Question Federal orders hell no.....that is their reason for existing.....but if the state is misusing them for political theater then they should be allowed to push back.

(11,096 posts)The idea of a military union will be anathema to every State's military department. Assuming the DoJ is correct (I simply do not know), the State military codes will be trumped by federal law. However, I would expect most, if not all, State military departments to resist.
Governor Abbott will have opened a box that would have been better left closed.

(6,589 posts)Bush is running for AG against Paxton. Guardsmen have their own ads, too.
He talks about being tough on immigration so Paxton now has ads running with Trump and go ON and ON about immigration.
