As COVID cases continue to decline, some local officials are taking this as a green light to lift the restrictions brought on by the Omicron surge. In just the last week, more than 10 statesincluding California, New York, and Massachusettshave made moves to end or revise their mask mandates, according to The New York Times. At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that as of Feb. 11, new daily coronavirus and hospital admissions were down by 42 percent and 25 percent, respectively. But despite the country's clear improvement from its pandemic peak in Jan. 2022, many virus experts are not ready to sign off on ending every precaution just yet. Read on to find out why the nation's top COVID adviser says the U.S. should not be rushing to end mask mandates.
During a Feb. 15 interview on MSNBC's All In With Chris Hayes, top White House COVID adviser Anthony Fauci, MD, discussed the country's ongoing fight against the virus and where we are in terms of ending the pandemic. According to Fauci, it is good news that cases and hospitalizations are going down every day in the U.S., indicating that "we're going in the right direction," he said.
"But we're not out of the woods yet," Fauci warned. "You may be done with COVID, but COVID is not done with the United States
We've got to do what it takes to get it to be done."
While some states have started getting rid of mask mandates, that might be premature, according to Fauciparticularly because we are not out of the woods yet. "The CDC still now recommends masking because of the degree of infection that we're seeing," he told MSNBC.
"But what I believe the states are doing is anticipating that we are going in the right direction and they feel they might as well just get back to trying to get some form of normality by pulling back on restrictions," Fauci continued. "We've got to be careful about that. You don't want to be declaring victory prematurely."

(448 posts)Is going to take decades to get under control. It will be up to the diligent to warn the unknowing that their failure to wear a mask is a death sentence to not only them but those in the vicinity. It will take an all-in approach including social distancing, decontamination and continued vaccines and boosters to bring back some form of normalcy.

(7,611 posts)I'm not sure that kind of statement helps your cause.
Not? I wear mine whenever in public, social distance and vaccine and boost so I don't catch the latest variant. It's the right and safest thing to do

(3,466 posts)Many of us who are fully vaxed and boosted are ready to drop the masks forever. If you don't feel safe without a mask, please continue to wear one but don't force everyone else to if they are fully vaxed and boosted and have practically a zero percent chance of dying if they catch covid.

(7,611 posts)to establish they make a difference do not show the difference is anything like exponential.

(5,164 posts)And even if you have an asymptomatic or a so called mild case you can have longterm organ damage, you can still transmit the virus and kill others, you ensure more mutations and you perpetuate this misery which those of us who have TRULY suffered would like to end for good.

(10,009 posts)Time will tell if he was correct.
New variants might emerge. Immunity might become less over time. Americans were told once there was a vaccine, returning to normal activities would happen, they were never told there would be no risk. Individuals will have to decide how much risk they are willing to take. It has been two years.
One thing I am sure of is I will have no sympathy for anyone that refused a vaccine out of willful ignorance should they become ill.
I also will refrain from public transportation if mask mandates on such transportation gets lifted.
