My father would never have used anything like that. The 3 of us in the back seat got killed we if caused trouble. Punishment, go real fast and slam on the breaks and watch those rotten kids fly. It was never fun.

It comes down to a frame of reference. There was little regard to how dangerous everyday activity could be.

so I could sit right between my parents.
The seat had a METAL STEERING WHEEL, directly in front of me, so I could help drive the car !

My dad taught me to recognize cars by make.
At age three I could name off Fords, Plymouths, Chevrolet, Dodge, Cadillac, whatever.

But when I saw a Ford, I was required to say,
"There goes another damn Ford."

This was surprising, and highly entertaining to other people when I rode with them, people like my uncles and aunts.

is people's desire not to die or harm their children. It's striking how few serious accidents ever happened, even before improving the vehicles themselves, considering the time most of us spend speeding down roads along with competing traffic.

those like us do. Since then, laws were passed due to action by a few concerned people, based on both mortality and morbidity statistics and studies on how to improve safety.

And we conform to those and assume what people like us do now is optimum and never question whether we should do more. How about leaving the children home while running errands, at least more? More than half of accidents occur within 5 miles of home.

I don't snear at this device. At least parents who used it were trying to do more. The norm for decades was to throw your arm up protectively across the child in front when hitting the brakes. Ask me how I know.

And we're talking normal driving speeds which cars even back in the '30s and '40s could easily achieve.

I guess my parents didn’t care about my safety as I don’t believe they used this modern safety device.

OK, I almost understand this for toddlers, but can you imagine your 8- or 9- or 10-year old agreeing to be strapped into a walking harness?

I still have vivid memories of lying in the way way back with my brothers on road trips.
