I may be wrong, I think Putin is planning a surgical strike in Ukraine.

Take over another piece of Ukraine like he did in Crimea. I don't see how Putin would see a full scale invasion, complete take over of Ukraine, would be in his best interest. The backlash would be severe.

Take it piece by piece, destabilize Ukraine in the hope of throwing into a civil war and having the pro Russia people of Ukraine take over the government.

Just my humble opinion.

Putin's very good at destabilizing. Just look at the US. Trying to create a civil war and having pro Russia people like Fox spews viewers and Russiapublicans take over government.

...declare those areas "free" (and thus ripe for annexation into the Russian Federation), but stop short of attacking Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa or other parts of Ukraine.

All while still holding the Sword of Damocles over the head of Ukrainians.

He might very well take Odesa and add to the collection because nobody is looking that way

but it seems to me Putin wants five things from Ukraine, all of which are achievable through a limited invasion that consolidates existing gains and extends controlled territory to the Dnieper river. The most important on the list are warm water ports and arable land. Taking Mariupol and its surroundings would put a massive dent in both agriculture production and trade for Ukraine which assists the third goal. The economic punch could cause the destabilization of pro-Western govt and create long-term unrest that can set the conditions for a pro-Russian govt. to be installed. The hit to national morale from long-term occupation kicks things further into a Russian advantage. This also links Crimea via land to Russia proper, another strategic goal for Putin. I think Odessa, where Ukrainian Nationalism runs pretty strong these days, would be an unnecessary risk since those other gains would effectively give Russia control over both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea blunting Odessa's economic output whenever they see fit to do so. So long as Putin occupies parts of Ukraine it is not eligible for NATO membership. That has been his very vocal demand from the start and if he can avoid massive casualties on both sides in achieving these, it's likely NATO's desire for hardship incurred through sanction wanes pretty quickly as the US becomes more focused on Pacific issues. More casualties = longer sanctions and pain for Russia and the oligarchy won't put up with that for long.

I think Putin will demand that Trump be sent to him to miraculously negotiate peace. Weirder things have happened.

They are rather ham-fisted when it comes to tactical doctrine. They may initially launch false-flag operations, but when the dust settles they want everyone to know who is responsible. They are old-school gangsters.

I have only a few statements still to make. I am grateful to Mr Chamberlain for all his efforts. I have assured him that the German people desires nothing else than peace, but I have also told him that I cannot go back behind the limits set to our patience. I have further assured him, and I repeat it here, that when this problem is solved there is for Germany no further territorial problem in Europe.

And I have further assured him that at the moment when Czechoslovakia solves her problems, that means when the Czechs have come to terms with their other minorities, and that peaceably and not through oppression, then I have no further interest in the Czech state. And that is guaranteed to him! We want no Czechs!
But in the same way I desire to state before the German people that with regard to the problem of the Sudeten Germans my patience is now at an end! I have made Mr Benes an offer which is nothing but the carrying into effect of what he himself has promised. The decision now lies in his hands: peace or war. He will either accept this offer and now at last give to the Germans their freedom or we will go and fetch this freedom for ourselves.

The majority Russian speaking areas. To the east, southeast and south.

I think the main goal is to get a land bridge to Crimea.
