A ballot measure in Michigan could give restaurant workers a huge raise by eliminating the $3.60 tipped minimum wage. If the measure passes every worker would make a minimum of $15/hour. Restaurant workers say a livable wage is the only way they’ll return to the industry.

1. Good, time to end the tipping model of compensation

We tip servers because we understand that is how they are compensated.

We also don't tip self serve gas station attendants, fast food workers, grocery cashiers, auto mechanics, or dry cleaning staff on every transaction, because it is also understood that they are compensated by their employer instead.

The tipping model has been broken for decades. A restaurant server for an $8 hamburger and a coke, works just as hard as someone serving a $50 steak and a $75 bottle of wine. Yet one would receive 10 times the amount of a tip compared to the other.

A young attractive woman with a tight outfit showing a lot of skin will be tipped much more generously by male customers than a less attractive waitress 25 years older. Time to just end it.
