House committee calls on DOT to investigate FAA's oversight of Boeing

Lawmakers in Congress are calling in the Department of Transportation’s investigative arm after Federal Aviation Administration officials failed to satisfy their inquiries into the two deadly 737 Max crashes and its oversight of The Boeing Co.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said that FAA Administrator Steve Dickson, who said Wednesday he is stepping down on March 31, did not provide adequate answers during its probe into how the agency responded to two decisions by Boeing (NYSE: BA) that contributed to the Max crashes.

The two crashes, about five months apart in 2018 and 2019, killed 346 people and set off a global grounding of Boeing’s bestselling jet for 20 months. The 737 Max is built in Renton and accounts for a significant amount of Boeing's production in Washington state.

Subsequent investigations into the causes of the crash revealed that Boeing withheld information about its flight control software system and faulty angle-of-attack sensors from regulators and customers.
