Storm Eunice: Rare red weather warning issued for parts of the UK

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-60417263

A rare red weather warning - the highest level - has been issued for parts of south-west England and south Wales on Friday, meaning there is a danger to life from flying debris.
The Met Office warned Storm Eunice could bring gusts of up to 90mph, causing significant disruption.
Damage to homes, cancelled trains and power cuts are also likely. Many schools are closing as a precaution.
The red warning is in place from 07:00 GMT until 12:00 GMT on Friday.

NL has declared that as of 14:00, no more trains run. I got to Utrecht an hour late, worked like fiend, including about 40 minutes of live translation back and forth between Russian and Dutch, and some subsequent paper work. Since the express train I usually take was canceled, I got a local from Utrecht to Arnhem, and from there, another local from Arnhem to Düsseldorf, on which I am now. We made across the German border by 13:15, so I’m clear back to Düsseldorf.

If all goes well, I’ll make the commuter train to our little medieval town outside Düsseldorf and be home at about 3:10 PM, about ten minutes later than the weather service said to be under no circumstances outside of your home. But everything is late in Europe, including the weather. I should make it home OK.

If I don’t, don’t forget to vote in November!

It was a struggle, as the wind had already blown down the electric power lines to the station in my town. I took a train back to the airport, and my wife picked me up there.

The wind is getting fierce out there.

Anyone outside from now until tomorrow morning is either a very large boulder or an idiot.

(bigger video at that link, which I think everyone can view, but here's a small version on YouTube:

The moment the Red Funnel ferry arrived in Southampton with no passengers on board and was caught in high winds was captured on video.

Leanna Lakes, Operations Director at Red Funnel, said: "Red Falcon approached the berth and experienced gusts of 80 knots causing the vessel to set down quickly onto the berth.

"Our highly trained Captain ensured the vessel was controlled throughout and berthed safely.

"No damage was sustained to either the vessel or shoreside infrastructure, testament to his excellent ship handling skills."

So you push the starboard bow against the concrete jetty, have the stern come way out starboard too, and then edge your way around the corner, straightening up as you go.

Meanwhile, about 20 miles south-west of Southampton:

"The Needles on the Isle of Wight recorded a wind gust of 122 mph this morning

This is provisionally the highest gust ever recorded in England"

It was not a nice day - rainy and breezy - but nothing like this! We'd planned on going fossil hunting but instead visited a fossil shop and small museum on the island.

The next day, Oct. 26, 2019 we got on a cruise ship to come back to the US. On the way, the ship had to change course to avoid a hurricane in the Atlantic. Lots of heaving and rough weather, some of the worst we saw during our trip.

A tower at a power station in Kent appears to have collapsed after being damaged during Storm Eunice.

Uniper UK, which owns Grain Power Station near Rochester, tweeted: "A weather-related incident has occurred at Grain power station, during storm Eunice."

It said there were no casualties and no risk to the local community.

"However, it has caused some damage on site and the power station has been temporarily taken offline as a precaution," the company said.

not one very close to me (though the Southampton ferry is under 10 miles away). No big problems locally. 3 dead in the UK, all on the roads from falling trees or debris, and in Ireland a council worker was hit by a tree as he was clearing up from the storm. At least 5 dead on the continent so far.
