I read Smedley Butler's book, "War is a Racket," and I believe every word he wrote. Both Democrats and Republicans have gotten us into senseless wars. It is good to learn from history, but history isn't real. it's over.
"Neighbor" Ukraine is not a military threat to Russia, none, zero. Ukraine is a political threat to Russia because the people of Ukraine decided to try democracy instead of autocracy, and that is a threat to Putin, democracy may just catch on.
One more item, Ukraine is a long way away from the United States, what do we have to fear if Russia invades Ukraine and installs a pro-Russian puppet? People had better think long and hard about that question. What Putin does in Ukraine can affect every one of our lives.
The United States invaded Iraq and in doing so committed a war crime. Putin is going to invade Ukraine and commit a war crime, there is no getting around both of those statements. You're darn right people should be condemning what Putin is about to do, even if they failed to condemn what we did, 2 wrongs don't make a right.

(21,336 posts)we need to face the fact we are back in a cold war with Russia and China. Russia isn't just going to stop with whatever it decides to do in Ukraine. Putin has been funding the fascist movement in the United States and it will continue.
One more thing, Putin could attack a NATO member, and then WW III is on.

(153,160 posts)it was just dreadful
it was Prague Spring and we thought it might just be a country behind the Iron Curtain being able to free itself. The crackdown by the Russians was ghastly.

(4,298 posts)We do live in global community and we have agreements with other democracies and would-be democracies across the globe. What happens in Ukraine will not stay in Ukraine.

(4,232 posts)an equivalence. Saddam had been attacking his neighbors, funding terrorism and openly using his military to kill his own citizens. I certainly detest Bush the Lesser but it's not the same thing. The pretext used was BS but when a comparison is made between Vermin Vlad and anybody else it will always be the case that anybody else is less evil and bloodthirsty.
On a related note maybe somebody who is talented (not me) with Photoshop or something could come up with a picture of Putin with the mustache and outfit of Boris Badenov.
