The benefits outweigh the bad

Watching an in-depth review of the Netflix series Midnight Mass, one of the reviewers may have hit the nail on the head regarding our own political divide. The series among other things examines blind faith and fanaticism. While the reviewer addressed the storyline, there are parallels to the trumpers.
Their ability to cast a blind eye to the awfulness of their positions may simply be outweighed by what they consider benefits, and it may be a simple as that.
If they were to embrace rationality, we have to recognize what they would lose - and that would be a large sense of comfort from their comradery, sense of belonging to something larger than themselves, a sense of superiority over all people of color and different religions, instant "friends," and more. To these met needs, logic is a threat.

The only thing we have are the penalties for criminal behavior. No more light sentences for the 1/6 participants would be a good start.
