Anybody Speak Russian?

“Men and boys are hiding because armed militants grab them right off the street.”

But there’s lots of evidence people don’t want to fight in Putin’s manufactured war and be used as cannon fodder. Here’s a text that says Donetsk authorities are brutally enforcing mobilization. “Men and boys are hiding because armed militants grab them right off the street.”

Here's the Google translation of it:

In the occupied territories, people will be taken away from home. They are trying to "mobilize" even minors.
Men and boys are hiding because armed militants grab them right on the street.

Ukrainian is very similar to Russian. I can understand it OK, but Google does a better quick job of translation than I could.

I was a Russian linguist in the USAF in the late 1960s. I was stationed at Samsun, Turkey in 1967-8, where I used those skills for various thing the USAF wanted me to do. That's how I learned to understand Ukrainian pretty well.

I discovered that I could understand Ukrainian if I thought of it like Russian with a heavy accent. That's not true, but it helped me. Ukrainians would be horrified, but it's true. Spelling and grammar are somewhat different, but most words are pretty much the same. You can't be expected to know.the differences unless you know one of them.

The texts read:

White: They took my brother. Stay strong. We gotta be strong together.

Green: Monsters. "Mobilization"?!

White: Yep. Uniform, gun, and they kidnapped him.

Green: Right from the apartment?

White: Yep. They wanted the younger one too, he's 15.
