Pelosi, Congressional Delegation Conclude Visit to 2022 Munich Security Conference
FEBRUARY 20, 2022 PRESS RELEASE
Munich Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after the Congressional delegation concluded participation in the 2022 Munich Security Conference:
In the interest of our national security, economic strength and democratic values, our Congressional delegation came to the 2022 Munich Security Conference to deliver a clear message that the United States remains unwavering in our commitment to NATO, the transatlantic partnership and our mutual security. We also salute Vice President Kamala Harris for her resolute address to the conference that highlighted Americas leadership in uniting and strengthening the transatlantic partnership and advancing global security, stability and peace.
Our delegation held a series of discussions with key American leaders to discuss our national security and commitment to diplomacy first. This included a briefing by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who outlined a diplomacy deterrence strategy that has united our nations allies around the globe. Our delegation also met with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe/U.S. European Command Commander Tod Wolters, U.S. Africa Commander Stephen Townsend, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith and the U.S. Country Team, led by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann.
Our delegation was honored to hold separate meetings with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. During these meetings, our delegation expressed Americas commitment to NATO and the transatlantic alliance, support for the people of Ukraine and opposition to Russian aggression.
At the conference, we witnessed the powerful speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. We also had the special opportunity to meet with Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko. Both offered a strong voice for the freedom of the Ukrainian people. In every meeting and public appearance, our delegation expressed Americas strong support for the people of Ukraine and reaffirmed Americas ironclad commitment to imposing swift and severe consequences if Russia chooses to invade Ukraine. In our response, the West will remain strong, united and resolute.
On Friday, I was honored to participate on a panel on the Global Challenge of Eroding Democracy with German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. I emphasized that our transatlantic partners must continue to strengthen our democratic institutions and values as bulwarks of our national and collective security.
During the Friday panel discussion, and at our delegations press conference on Saturday evening, I offered a quote by President Ronald Reagan in which he highlighted the importance of defending our democracy: Freedom is a fragile thing, and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation.
COVID continues to have an impact on our security and economic and governmental decisions. Our delegation was pleased to benefit from a meeting with World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, during which he and his colleagues provided a timely update on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our delegation underscored the need for transparency, accountability, access and distribution equity in the global pandemic response.
As we travel to London, our delegation will strive to deepen our interparliamentary dialogue on how we can continue to work with our British counterparts to ensure security, advance economic prosperity and promote our shared values.

(15,325 posts)1. Representing to the world, a solid united front for the Ukraine region
..and Democracies throughout the world.
This is why I am forever grateful to our Democratic Leaders today.
America has always known where we stand in the world. There has never been a question about our position.
And there will never be a single doubt about our solidarity against the threat of authoritarian dominating thuggery.
Thank you President Joe Biden.
