It won't be confined to Ukraine.
He is throwing down the gauntlet to NATO.
This is not going to end well.

(19,547 posts)I'll guess.
He no longer has a stooge in the White House, knows his networks in the U.S. are going to be rolled up by the FBI, knows that nnow he is going to face retaliation in a big way for the last 4 years of gutting American institutions via Trump, etc. etc. etc., so he is taking a wild gamble before shit comes down on him hard.
Your mileage may vary.

I would venture to guess that now these institutions are being revitalized.

(7,282 posts)If he invades Ukraine no one else is going to attack him. There will just be sanctions. He will have to do much more than that to start WW3.

There is more than one analyst in the media that I have read that expressed the same concern.
War has a funny way of being unpredictable.

(68,556 posts)of hysterical. We will not start a war that could destroy the world over Ukraine...we are talking sanctions and punishment...not military actions. As for Putin, he could march into Eastern Europe, he did it before but I sincerely doubt he could hold it especially since he would pretty much be shunned by everyone. And we set a bad precedent in Afghanistan and Iraq too.

(46,703 posts)He will probably be shot by his own people if it went that far. The oligarchs have had it too good for too long; and the regular people have had it bad for too long, and won't accept worse.

(768 posts)I have little doubt that Putin's goal is to attack and control any country not part of NATO at this point.
He already has Belarus and Georgia in his grasp and soon, he will have Ukraine the greatest prize of all.
We will be is a similar situation as we were at the end of the Cold War in 1990, although seven former Soviet nations are now in NATO: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia and Slovenia part of the former Yugoslavia. There is still the island of Russian friendly countries around Serbia and Bosnia. Unlikely he would go for those since they are surrounded by NATO countries.
Putin knows that time is of the essence, he wants to stop the spread of NATO at all costs. You postulate a WW3, but unless Putin tries to acquire a NATO country, that seems unlikely.
Here's the NATO map.

(6,526 posts)that it is a distinct possibility that WW3 could start. I am not sure why this board chooses to ridicule someone who is commenting on what the rest of the world is commenting on. It's pretty hard to know what can be said here, when you are gonna get kicked in the teeth for expressing an honest opinion. I especially object to having such opinion labeled almost routinely as fearmongering. The whole world is afraid right now. It is normal to be nervous, depressed, anxious, and fearful. Normal.
The summit sounds interesting, but I don't see Putin responding in any way. He's waiting for something else to happen, and filling in the time with false hope. I'd love to wake up to find that the world is no longer threatened by Putin.
You know, I recall that Obama met face to face with Putin, and told him that if he did not stop cyber hacking, we would consider it an act of war. Putin has been given enough slack already, and still he gets more.
And, the last thing is, that his government, the lower Duma (as opposed to the upper Duma, equivalent to a fourth floor) apparently supports him and is helping to strategize the whole bloody mess. This is why we can't have nice things.
I think we need to be mindful of this year's election in our own country, and make sure that tRump and his fascist party does not get back in power.

(68,556 posts)more than 20 years of war...which by the way began when we invaded two countries, we would favor more war. We can't have two nuclear powers engage in a conventional war. It is madness and it won't happen. We can drive Russia into the ground using other methods...

(19,547 posts)Kamala Harris is wrong?
I agree with her, there is a possibility for this to become a war in Europe.
"We're talking about the potential for war in Europe. I mean, let's really take a moment to understand the significance of what we're talking about," she told reporters in Munich.
She continued: "It's been over 70 years, and through those 70 years ... there has been peace and security. We are talking about the real possibility of war in Europe."

She didn't stutter.
