Grant was certainly flawed and fallible, but he was also a great man who did many extraordinary and difficult things.
Of course this was all at a time when republicans were progressive and democrats were conservative for the most part. My how things have changed.

He's exactly the type of Republican who became a Democrat after the parties realigned. Teddy Roosevelt as well.
