"FDA Mulling Approving Second Covid Booster Shot: Report"
The Food and Drug Administration has started reviewing data to authorize a second booster dose of the Pfizer PFE-1.57% and Moderna MRNA-1.12% vaccines, the WSJ reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the situation.
The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Last month, the FDA amended its emergency authorization for the Moderna MRNA-1.12% shot, shortening the interval for a booster shot from six months to five months. Earlier in January, the FDA cut the recommended interval between the second and third doses of the Pfizer PFE-1.57% vaccine for all adults to five months.
Planning is still in the early stages, and several issues would need to be resolved before health regulators moved forward with the process, the WSJ report said. These include determinations as to whether the second booster should be authorized for all adults or limited to certain age groups, and whether it should target the Omicron variant or be formulated differently.
No decision is final, the report added, saying it could be necessary to make booster shots available earlier if a new variant of the virus appeared.
