---I remember when politicians stupid and disloyal enough to praise a Russian warmonger like Putin---as Trump and Pompeo just have--- would not dare appear in public again lest they be spat upon by decent people enraged by their traitorous words.

(4,549 posts)Its OK to support Putin and all those who support his horrendous regime.
Born in 1954, it was drilled into my brain that Russia and East Germany offered repressive, unpleasant ways of life. It was further cemented that Communism was bad.
I think people who werent taught it or lived thru it will need a real-life lesson for it to become apparent. Cant they take our word for it that this was a bad thing???
Its a little like how SOME young people dont feel an urgent need to defend our dwindling abortion rights in this country. They didnt live thru the coat-hanger era so they seem to have to relive it in order to see how bad it was, and how our freedom is slipping away again.

(81,193 posts)I remember covering the opening of the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA, quite awhile before he died.
I'll always wonder one thing:
He had a VERY grand, elaborate, gold - well - necklace, I guess, although that wasn't what it was called. It was the kind of formal ornamentation that one wore draped across the chest from shoulder to shoulder, like some lavish medieval-looking Chancellor-of-the-Exchequer-type decoration, which was displayed in a large showcase with other distinguished tokens.
According to the accompanying story, it was the official decoration for some high-level government VIP, I forget from which country, and they handed it to Reagan during a Presidential visit there. As the story's told, he cradled it in both hands, speechless, except to say, "is this for me?" And whoever he was meeting with evidently didn't have the heart to say "no, Mr. President, that's the formal ceremonial blah-black-blah of the whatever-whatever-whatever... and I merely assumed you'd like to hold it for a moment". So an agreement was made that it could be kept on display at the Reagan Library, until Reagan's death, when it was to be returned to whatever country that had inadvertently lent it to the collection. Good Grief the slack everybody cut Ronald Reagan!!! Honestly, I NEVER understood the appeal. And I never will.
I hope somebody actually did remember to send that amazing object of distinction back to wherever it belongs!

(6,546 posts)And he never looked back. He registered and voted as a Democrat thereafter. He said that he did not fight in WWI to have Reagan as the US President. He became one of Jimmy Carter's strongest supporters, saying he was a good man unlike the (cuss words) Republican candidate.

But her praise of Putin is NOT funny to me. Cant believe it is happening.

(6,583 posts)There should be far more protesting, people in the streets, etc.
I'm old enough to remember when those things happened regularly, and, over time, produced change.
Now I mainly just see complaining on social media. It doesn't bode well for our future.
