Best possible, best likely?
There are some good things here that could happen. All assuming Putin loses of course
Europe takes the opportunity to make a massive conversion to sustainable energy
Which shrinks pooties market significantly and helps the planets chances to avoid climate catastrophe.

But perhaps Putin's blood will be towards the end...
He doesn't even really have the military "with him" in this boondoggle, it appears. So far they are "taking orders", but when they take big casualties, that equation is likely to change.

My brain needs something positive. I might be looking in the wrong place. I just keep scrolling for updates from Ukraine. I had an ancestor who left that area before WWII. I keep thinking of those folks
Its so freaking revolting that the right wing is supporting Putin I cant even believe it

While uncertainty is the watchword of the day, economists believe that a war between Russia and Ukraine will not be a major risk to the U.S. economy.

Do you think we should not have moved troops into defensive positions in NATO countries? Should we not be supporting Ukraine?

(19,564 posts)I do want to mention that I've seen propagandist supporting Russia out and about everyplace on the internet recently. Which I assume is what this was? Alert, call them out and expect more to fill their void. It's just how it works in times such as these. For example, 2014-2016 were nuts around here, but I think most here now know better and at least RT is out of LBN now. Crazy days those were.
Some are actual Russians I've seen, but here I suspect it's local level trolls just buying the propaganda being sold to them wholesale. It's truly sad to witness.

Also, economic sanctions and a demoralized Russian military may fuel a greater desire for insurgency against Putin.

(5,557 posts)I'll be honest that I'm upset that there are still more sanctions possible, meaning that after Russia stole Crimea, we didn't play every card we held.
No more weak slaps on the wrist, no more even playing fair. Isolate and implode them; causing suffering to the Russian people now is for the good of the rest of the world.

(19,564 posts)I'm a recent pessimist, not an eternal one.
I'm not being snarky, or baiting. I'm just curious since my worst case's scenario is an end game of Putin trying to leave as much damage in his wake before he dies as his ultimate legacy as possible. He's sowed dissent in Europe, the UK and the US on levels I'd have never thought possible in my college years. But, all of this is just my perspective.

He'll be an international pariah, but I don't think he cares about that. He'll find markets for Russian oil even if Europe ceases to be a customer.

(19,564 posts)Putin will not bask in murdering people for his ego. That's best case I can imagine.
He's a very messed up person who is angry over things which transpired some 2 decades ago (expansions of NATO) which I think he took as salt in the wounds of the breakup of the Soviet Union. Which he's most definitely never recovered from. He's been playing a long game since the early '00 and here we are. He's going to very possibly murder a lot of people for some slight he's been lamenting for that long. That's the legacy he wants.
