Ukraine is a white, European, Christian nation with major cosmopolitan cities. Exactly the type of people that Republican base voters tend to identify with. Russia, under Putin, made major inroads over the last decade currying favor inside today's Republican Party. Under Trump Putin almost managed to destroy NATO. Russia has reason to believe that Trump can be reinstalled as their boy in Washington come 2024, but all that effort can go up in smoke if, for example, Putin launches an all out assault on Kiev.
Americans, in recent decades, viewed urban warfare on TV, leveling homes in Syria, in Iraq, in Afghanistan. We saw floods of refugees fleeing violence in Rwanda, in Libya, in Myanmar. But they weren't white European Christians.
Tucker Carlson can try spinning fast enough to turn a turbine providing power for Boise, but that won't make Putin palatable to white Christian Fox viewers watching Ukrainian churches get bombed to smithereens.
Putin closed within striking distance of successfully subverting American democracy. That Kremlin wet dream will be among the first casualties of Putin's war in Ukraine, if missiles start falling there.

(5,269 posts)Ukraine seems unprepared and caught off guard until just a couple of days ago in denial that Putin seriously wanted to invade and takeover.

(22,912 posts)Ukraine could have prepared more sooner, but no degree of preparation that they were capable of doing alone could have been sufficient to initially defeat a full on Russian invasion. What matters most now is their resolve to fight. An invasion is one thing, a successful occupation is another.
I don't think Ukraine will "stand down" if fully invaded, and if it doesn't Putin will eventually lose, at a horrific human cost.

(94,520 posts)Russia (in the west) is also a White, European, Christian nation. The point is that, in the minds of the RW, there are good Whites and badWhites just like they see the situation here. And they know the Ukrainians are bad Whites because theyre seen as tied to Hunter Biden. They would have no reason to drop support for Russia.

(22,912 posts)And there will always be some far right minds who even think that Hitler was a "Good White", but (after some serious flirtation with overt fascism in the 30's) most of the American right settled into thinking that the British were "Good Whites" during WWII, but not the Germans.
When whites start getting slaughtered in Europe, the aggressors become the villains.

I think this will cost them, we should be exploiting this as much as possible

(21,323 posts)because the Putin apologists will show the bloodshed and blame president Biden and the Democrats and the MSM and the GQP will follow suit.
IMO a big reason that Putin invaded Ukraine was to bring down president Biden and the Democrats.
Putin's #1 goal is to end democracy in the United States.

(22,912 posts)But I think some here are underestimating the power that the suffering of "sympathetic" innocent victims conveys. And to those who say that Ukrainians will not seem "sympathetic" to many Trump voters, I will point out that even in the entrenched racist society that held sway in White America in the early 1960's, the death of four young African American girls in the Birmingham Alabama Church bombing in 1963 broke through to a significant number of previously indifferent white Americans sufficiently enough to meaningfully advance the struggle for civil rights in America. Many considered that a turning point.

(22,912 posts)It may not be immediate, it may take months, but the war in Ukraine will not end anytime soon, Ukrainians will continue to resist, and more and more Americans will identify with their struggle.

(15,536 posts)The only thing Americans care about is what hits them in the pocketbook, and they will place the blame for that on our President. If the pandemic and the insurrection didn't prove to you what Americans are really like, then I don't know what will.
