What would happen to Putin if somebody grabbed or bombed his oil and gas fields in Siberia?

(2,527 posts)Some of the posters here seem to forget Russia has nukes and bombing them(especially bombing a strategic asset and major component of their economy), or destroying their military buildup(that I have seen advocated for here as well) dramatically increases the chances that Russia would use them.

(18,181 posts)when a rat, ie: Putin, is cornered, it will lash out.
There is no doubt in my mind that that rat would launch if such a scenario happened.
I suspect that most who are advocating for attacking Russian forces or territory are those who have never seen war personally and have no concept of actual combat.

(3,120 posts)a significant portion of the gas fields that supply the globe with energy, I don't think it would be without consequence for a lot more people than just Putin.

(22,835 posts)Or putting troops on Russian soil.
We already fly our planes and sail ships close to their territorial zone, as they do to us. We are just nicer about the escorts and don't usually endanger the Russians

Who are the NATO nations and who does NATO's mutual defense pact protect? In addition to deterring attack on any or all of its members, is it meant to have a deterrent effect against starting a WWIII?
Russia's been upgrading and strengthening its nuclear arsenal, as well as much of the rest of its military. As a result European nations have been also. The combined might of the NATO forces still far outweighs Russia's. But the goal is still to never have to use it.

(25 posts)Although i do not agree with setting a stage for war in Europe. Putin needs to be put on defense maybe we should kick Russia out of the western hemisphere. Remind him of the Monroe doctrine and our historical connection with Cuba and Venezuela.

(38,396 posts)I would normally welcome you to DU, but your account is almost 20 years old so you must have lurked for the years. But nevertheless, welcome to DU posting with your first post.
I'm just curious...how did you keep your account active through the different upgrades to DU...the original DU, DU2 and now DU3 plus the infamous hack of 2016? Quite an achievement!

(18,272 posts)There's no obligation for NATO states to stand up to Russia. That doesn't mean they shouldn't or won't.
