congressional approval before sending troops into Ukraine

Forty-three lawmakers asked Biden to get congressional approval before sending troops into Ukraine.

The lawmakers, some of whom have acrimonious histories, cosigned a letter to the president.

Biden has sent US troops to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania amid escalating tensions in the region.

Forty-three lawmakers from both sides of the aisle signed a letter urging President Joe Biden to obtain approval from Congress before sending US troops to intervene in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The letter, dated Tuesday, was signed by Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cori Bush and Trump-allied GOP representatives including Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar. It called for Biden to abide by the Constitution and seek congressional authorization before sending US troops to "engage in hostilities."

"We strongly urge your administration to respect the separation of powers, U.S. law, and Congress's constitutional war powers authority," the letter read.

1. The President has already said he would not put American boots on the ground in Ukraine.
2. If an event arises where an action is necessary, the president can commit to a military action without the consent of Congress.

The requirement is that he must notify Congress within 48 hours of such an action, and needs to get Congressional approval if such an action will exceed 60 days plus 30 days to withdraw.

A President must have that power. As Commander in Chief he can order defensive or offensive action at a moment's notice for the simple reason that getting the approval of hundreds of legislators before any action, could leave the country defenseless if attacked, and announcing offensive actions in advance of a target would put our people in more danger.

Can you just see how that would work out when we were getting Osama bin Laden.

Many Presidents have found the need to exercise without "Congressional approval", and it was perfectly Constitutional.

For example, Carter did it when he tried the Iran hostage rescue attempt, and Reagan did it in Grenada, as two examples

1. I used to believe in Congressional approval, but so many of them

are crackpots, opportunists, performance artists, seriously stupid, and/or Russian assets. Not enough serious, sober people in Congress to rely on them to make good foreign policy decisions. This isn't the early 2000's anymore.
