(16,829 posts)Today's Navy handles operations on and under the sea, in the air and on the ground. It spans 100 international ports and the open ocean. Elite groups within the Navy, such as the SEALs and Navy Divers, receive specialized training for advanced warfare situations.

(12,676 posts)They practice for this sort of thing regularly.
And NATO has more than three missile ships that aren't being held together with 40 layers of paint as most Russian ships I've seen over the years.
Subs, now...that the worry.

(15,353 posts)If the shooting starts, they wouldn't last a week. We know that, and they know that.
I guarantee you that there is a US Fast Attack submarine that has a firing solution on every single sub they currently have deployed.
Could they inflict some damage? Sure, but one Carrier Strike Group contains more firepower than the entire Russian Navy, and the US has 11 if those alone.

(12,483 posts)Has a hypersonic ASM ever been fired at a carrier group?
Id like to NEVER find out.

(15,353 posts)There has been rumblings of hypersonic missiles back then. Even now, from what I understand, there may be some that have been tested, or even shown to reach Mach-5. The issue has always been targeting. Doesn't matter how fast a weapon can travel if you don't have the intel, technology or ability to have it hit what you want it to hit, it's just a fast, expensive piece of crap.
The United States is also developing hypersonic weapons, but more importantly, laser, pulse and drone counter measures and missile defense systems.
They develop a missile that they say can't be defeated, we developed CIWS and Rolling Air-Frame missile defense systems to defeat them.
And no, I don't think a hypersonic missiles would ever be fired at any Aircraft Carrier, because of they did, we'd destroy them.
I was not joking. There is not one single Russian submarine underway today that does not have a fast attack on its tail.
I am not saying that they couldn't do some damage, but if you put me in a ring with Mike Tyson, I might hit him one time, but I think I would regret it.

(12,483 posts)My grandfather was on a cruiser in the Pacific in 1943-1945 involved in almost all the hot spots, the USS Cleveland was all over the place including the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
He rarely talked about it... but after a few too many Hamms... he once talked about using firehoses after a Kamikaze attack to rinse off the metal and human remains back into the sea.

(4,907 posts)But Wikipedia does has a list of active Russian Navy ships.

As a previous post mentioned, while most of the Russian ships are 30-40 years old (with question as to how well they've been maintained), the biggest worry is submarines.

(15,353 posts)could match the firepower, technology, logistics, survivability or lethality of the United States Navy.
One thing we have done very well is build, fund and equip a Navy that can control the sea lanes and project power across the globe. There is simply no other Navy that comes close.

(1,038 posts)The modern US Navy is a projection of absolute dominant power.
Truthfully there is nothing that anyone can do to counter a modern US carrier strike group ... nothing.
Someone could possibly catch them by surprise and do some damage but the retaliation would be hell on earth, and it would be fast.
Many think that they are just sitting there bobbing in the water, floating along with the tides, a virtual sitting duck. Not even close to accurate. They are always moving, and they are not slow by any standard and their sphere of control is absolute and very big ... hundreds of miles and there is nothing in that area that they do not know about and can destroy in moments.

(12,483 posts)Naval forces are fast becoming obsolete. The Russians and Chinese both have HS ASM's

(15,353 posts)So Naval forces will never become obsolete.
Hypersonic ASMs don't have reliable targeting capability yet. They may go fast, but they can't hit the broadside of a barn, yet...
The US is also developing defense systems to counter them.
