The BBC interviewed a former Ukrainian national security advisor, and he made a good point - part of modern warfare (and, for that matter, ancient, but the internet is so much better at it) is to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt, and so the sources and routes of claimed events must be considered carefully. He pointed out that the rumours of an attack on Odessa, for instance, have been questioned as an attempt by Russia to disrupt Ukraine.
While the Ukrainians are the principal target of such propaganda, we in "the West" are also recipients, and can be used to make things look worse than they are. We should all think about the reliability of sources we pass on, and also include any caveats that proper journalists give in a report.
