his puppet and elected Zelenzky.
Had he merely succeeded in keeping Crimea, and obtaining the Donbas area, the remaining Ukraine would have been heavily anti-Russia and probably become part of NATO eventually.

Unless Ukrainians won't be able to hold free and fair elections anymore, they will eventually elect a president of their choosing again.

Free and fair elections. The point of setting up a puppet government is to avoid letting people choose their leader.
