Hmmmm, have they "taken" meaning in control of the airport or are the Russians still fighting?

Yes. Means the Russians have a strong defensive position, can repel attacks from any direction.

"Taken the airport" usually means there is control of the airport by the enemy.

that they are maintaining a perimeter; which could indicate that they have control of the airport.

And they are holding the perimeter. So yes they have control of the airport.
They can start bringing in supplies, launch air attacks, and bring in special op troops, light tanks and trucks, etc.
